Discussion: Deadspin Editor: 'We're Going To Sit Here, Eat Some S---.... What Else Can We Do?'

Discussion for article #228919

So, um, why don’t you just issue a retraction? “We were misinformed. The story was incorrect. We’re sorry we screwed up.”

I’d love to get on a field against Cory Gardner.

Ever heard of “targeting?”

My father used to say that the helmets with the ear holes weren’t for hearing, they were for gabbing a hold off when you bring you knee up into their face.

Wait–did I just say that aloud? I feel so ashamed.

“If you’re looking for someone to blame here, blame me for getting way too cocky about my site’s ability to prove a negative.”

That’s not enough?

Not enough. Proper “publications” and real editors issue retractions and apologies as necessary.

Well, you could issue a retraction, but then go on to add, “we still believe he’s a complete trainwreck and a liar”

What? Why would you do something so fucking stupid? What was the point?

From the article referenced:

“UPDATE: Gardner campaign spokesman Alex Siciliano sent the following, presented in its entirety, via email: “Cory Gardner played football from Junior High through Sophomore year in high school.” Eli Stokols of FOX-31 in Denver is reporting the Gardner campaign told him, “Gardner played football through soph year of high school, never played varsity.” Reached Wednesday night at his home, Chuck Pfalmer, longtime stats keeper for Gardner’s alma mater, Yuma High School, and a primary source for the story, told me: “Cory did play football for three years” in high school, and that his records show that Gardner spent his junior year “on varsity.” During a lengthy conversation about Yuma High football on Tuesday, Pfalmer repeatedly said Gardner had not played football at the school.”

Are you mollified now?

What a fucking cop-out. Like there are no year books online, no local newspapers whereby they could verify this “historian’s” assertions?

If you’re looking for someone to blame here, blame me for getting way too cocky about my site’s ability to prove a negative.

Uhhhh… the problem here is that it is possible to disprove a negative, if the negative statement is false, and you didn’t really try to.

As a rule “we’re going to sit here and eat shit” is a pretty healthy response when you’ve screwed the journalistic pooch. Should have stopped there.

Maybe what that goofy guy should is learn to determine if the person alleged to have lied or the person doing the alleging is the liar.

OMG, this is as bad as the kerning incident that cost Dan Rather his job!

Seriously, people - this is the depths to which coverage and response has sunk.

I was thinking the same thing. They focused on evidence he wasn’t on the team, and neglected to look for evidence he was.

I have no idea what you are asking. Do you work for the website or are you merely an unpaid spokesman/water carrier for it? The last paragraph in the TPM piece isn’t an apology, is it?

From the article:

The website hasn’t formally corrected or retracted the story…

Why haven’t they?

I don’t work for them. You seemed so upset, I thought the update/clarification might help. I really hope they will issue what you consider a proper apology so you can get some sleep. At least you got ‘water carrier’ in there, so you must feel at least a bit better.

Does this help?
