Discussion for article #227390
Pre k is a good thing and it gives parents a place to put their kids for a while. Does it make geniuses, hardly. The effort should not end until the child is all the way through High School.
Unfortunately, I know this one all too well from my own experience.
Pre-K a standard in some places and a luxury in others. The “time skeptics” are from a larger group that sat on their asses while charter school terrorists and religious bigots, drained resources from public education, to the detriment of quality education.
There are no better examples than urban cities, where a lack of early education and quality educational programs, forties a large ignorant cross section of the population. Which is not discounted by income or class. Actualizing this program is a good first step, in building a better educational system in NYC. Waiting for a new Emperor or Chancellor played out.
Uh, yeah, it will get better as it goes on. Meanwhile, working parents can work and tens of thousands of kids have a secure place to be every day where they can get a square meal or two. For many families, that will be a game changer.
Meanwhile, the problem with our K-12 educational system continues to be grotesque inequality, and our school results aren’t going to look like those of the Nordic countries as long as our wealth disparity looks like that of the third world. All the nice DC liberals waxing wonkesque about the fine points of pedagogy and policy won’t change that, and letting private companies turn our children into profit centers sure as heck isn’t going to cut it.
