Discussion for article #225609
David Brooks is they guy who, infallibly, always shows up at your dorm room when you break out the bong, but never, actually has anything to put in it.
Seems like a pretty well considered view to me, and Iām rarely in tune with Brooks. Still wonāt stop me spending 2 months in Telluride this winter!
Brooks is still a FID/FUD warrior when it comes to drug policy.
Gambling probably has just as bad an effect on the brain, and likely worse on teenage brains, yet the states run lotteries and most of them now sanction casinos.
As for Scarborough, I would agree that āPot just makes you dumb,ā but so does watching Morning Joe.
so brooks is in favor of a return to alcohol prohibition. i understand many teenagers drink, and everyone knows alcohol is the most dangerous recreational drug there is.
The greater problem is the effect law enforcement is having on society. The drug war is devastating and must be addressed anew. Cheap jokes about the haze in the editorial room are getting old, as they were in the 70s when this misbegotten war got started.
These guys/gals most worried about decriminalization/legalization never compare & contrast the grotesque costs of incarceration to society to liberalization, even though they claim to be rationalists making informed libertarian choices about everything. Of course, they know that people of their class never go to jail for pot possessionā¦but they studiously ignore those who do. Because they are such Serious Important Peopleā¢.
Lord, shut up already.
Oh, shut up, you coddled Beltway asshole.
As long as we insist on invoking the images of foggy hippies ,pejorative vernacular and shop worn cliches to frame the cannabis discussion, there will be dopes like Cupp and Brooks adding nothing to the discourse which should be taken seriously for the medical and social implications.Face it.the reality is that MILLIONS of people use this substance every day in scores of different forms. The anti cannabis culture that exists is a direct result of years of draconian laws, unabashed propaganda abetted by a failed financial fiasco regarding the war on drugs and the curious rise and prosperity of the private prison system.Big business is finding a way to get involved and once fully underway, the likes of Brooks and his ilk might as well go shout in a wind tunnelā¦no one will give a rats ass when the financial avalanche comes to bear.
Brooks is already hearing the echos of that avalanche coming. That is why he brought out the fig leave of letting states experiment. In about 5-10 years, Brooks will be writing articles claiming there are minimal health risks involved.
And he will still be the guy showing up at the cocktail/hookah parties as soon as the lighters come out, but without any of his own stash.
First of all, these type of comments always make me wonder if he is actually upset that some of his buddies in industry are going to lose money of if the stance actually IS well thought out.
Second of all, we already have prohibition and it doesnāt keep kids of weed. I donāt understand how he thinks that legalizing m-j and lessening the load on the legal system is going to actually make that situation worse.
What is his actual complaint? It seems heās his only real complaint is that it wonāt work because it will be legal for adults, but not for children.
Maybe I missed his point, but Im not reading that shit again.
Purely anecdotally, my grades improved when I started smoking pot regularly in my senior year of college. I was a chemistry major and I have gone on to earn a PhD in biochemistry and a law degree. It sure as hell didnāt make me stupid or unmotivated.
The panelists Reefer Madness-inspired arguments simply donāt hold water.
I donāt smoke pot or want anybody I love to waste their time smoking it, but America has untold thousands in jail right now and millions with ruined lives because of the criminal and employment sanctions associated with pot smoking. When are we going to realize Americaās response to pot is worse than the drug.
Ha. Ha.
Fundamentalist religion makes you dumber than pot.
And irreparably influences youth.
Attended an Astros game Saturday night with two friends; one raised Catholic, the other an Atheist.
On our way out there was a young man about 19-or-20 doing the soapbox/pamphlet/yelling thing.
On a breezeless, 90Ā°/90% humidity evening in Houston.
Thought to myself-- then commented allowed: āGlad my faith doesnāt compel me to do such things.ā
Resulting in nods. Head-shaking. And smirks.
The God I know?
Believes in air conditioning.
Hopefully that boy sees the light one day.

Hey Brooks, Federal legalization and āleaving it to the states to experimentā are the same thing, dummy.
David Brooks is a mental midget.
No one is talking about legalizing pot for <18. Tobacco is illegal for them and itās a lot more dangerous for them as well, yet heās OK with its continued legalization but not for pot.
