Discussion: David Bowie Dies At 69, Days After Album Release

Discussion for article #244483

At 69, he still had something left in the tank. One of the greatest rock and roll artists of all time. He moved to the beat of his own drum, and made everyone follow along. Very big influence on many lives. Weā€™ll miss you, David.

Rest in orbit Major Tom.

Iā€™m stepping through the door
And Iā€™m floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different todayā€¦

He will be missed and sadly he is gone far too early. A true rock and roll icon has been lost and Bowie
made the world a better place. RIP

Iā€™m trying to remember a songā€¦

"And in the death
As the last few corpses lay rotting on the slimy
thoroughfare
The shutters lifted in inches in Temperance Building
High on Poacherā€™s Hill
And red, mutant eyes gaze down on Hunger City
No more big wheels
Fleas the size of rats sucked on rats the size of cats
And ten thousand peoploids split into small tribes
Coverting the highest of the sterile skyscrapers
Like packs of dogs assaulting the glass fronts of Love-Me Avenue
Ripping and rewrapping mink and shiny silver fox, now legwarmers
Family badge of sapphire and cracked emerald
Any day now
The Year of the Diamond Dogs
ā€œThis ainā€™t Rockā€™nā€™Roll
This is Genocideā€

This one?

I just watched Bowieā€™s last video titled ā€œLazarusā€. The first verse:

Look up here, Iā€™m in heaven
Iā€™ve got scars that canā€™t be seen
Iā€™ve got drama, canā€™t be stolen
Everybody knows me now

That drama line is so accurate.

Showtime is running a documentary called ā€œFive Yearsā€, released in Aug of 2014. Very well done, worth seeing.

And anyone who has not seen The Man Who Fell To Earth is missing a great movie. He was absolutely perfect for the part.

Heavy. Go on pretending that Bowie is some kind of deep thinker.

Go away Landshark.

Ground control ? Ha ha ha .

Quite a writer!

Extremely overrated. Real artists donā€™t need to change costumes and images every five minutes, but he did inspire Madonna.

I am stunned, tearful. Iā€™ve marveled at how he survived intact, creative and productive while others of his generation self-destructed. It sure seemed like he was in a good place ā€“ a happy marriage, beautiful young daughter only 15 now and facing young adulthood without her father. And he raised his son Duncan into a healthy, loving man with a brilliant directing career unfolding. The man was a mensch in the truest sense of the word. His music, was the music of my teens and young adulthood ā€“ and its stayed with me even as I ventured into other styles. In the past couple of years I started watching his work on youtube. If you want to see a fantastic performance ā€“ just watch Bowie Live at the Beeb circa 2000. I heard his last release Blackstar just days ago ā€“ and the title track is haunting, but I had no idea he was ill (I see now, it was a farewell.) He always managed to look beautiful ā€“ I thought he was aging gracefully, naturally. Now his image is frozen in time. I am so sad for his family ā€“ and for the loss of another icon of my childhood. This is hitting me hard this morning.

RIPā€¦not even of that generation and I loved his music. Heck, some of my favorite covers at Phish shows have been Bowie tunes (not to mention their own tune/homage named ā€œDavid Bowieā€ hehe).

Ziggy has risen to the stars
Maybe now heā€™ll finally find out
if there really is Life on Marsā€¦

A sad day for Bowie fans, they can still listen to Prince and Madonna.

David Byrne of The Talking Heads said it best 20 years ago at Bowieā€™s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:

ā€œLike all rock ā€˜nā€™ roll, it was visionary, it was tasteless, it was glamorous, it was perverse, it was fun, it was crass, it was sexy and it was confusing.ā€

You really are a no-nothing. I am 58 and female and always despised Madonnaā€™s thin insipid voice and vapid vomit inducing lyrics. The 80s for me were Eno and Talking Heads ā€“ much more interesting. Bowie was 70s ā€“ and after the Beatles, the performer whose music is most ingrained in my heart.
Its disgusting that you would troll this place ā€“ a place you often leave comments on. What kind of person shits the nest?
