Discussion: 'Daily Show' Updates Sanders' 'America' Ad For Old People, Black Voters (VIDEO)

Discussion for article #245281

Bernie is aware that, as an older Jew from Brooklyn, he´s a little exotic for Iowa, so to show diversity, he´s using music from a couple of older Jews from Queens.

This cracked me up. Thanks!

“Like, if Bernie wanted to win votes with senior citizens in Florida, he would do this,” Wood added, before cutting to the ad set to the theme song from the hit show “The Golden Girls.”

Simon and Garfunkel’s America came out almost 50 years ago, people who listened to it in their teens and twenties are senior citizens.

Exactly. To me, that ad is geared to the people who want to tell you about their experience at Woodstock and their grandchildren who have romanticized that whole experience from hearing about it. If you want to appeal to me, try having a ad that uses The Clash.

¨I´m So Bored with the USA¨ should be avoided, however.

I was slow to warm up to Trevor Noah, but I’m liking him (and his writers, I guess) more and more. This bit actually made me laugh 3 separate times.

And if you want to appeal to me, show something with ‘The Clock Scene’ from “Boris Godunov” by Moussorgsky as background.

When I heard the ad, oddly, the first thing that came into my mind was this other song from the same era.

Those were the days my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way

Ah, Mary Hopkin. What a sweetheart.

We should probably avoid Russian composers during a political campaign, but maybe for the inauguration.

Putin often uses the Tchaikovsky Festival Coronation March as his ‘Hail to the Chief’ No doubt, Trump will want to borrow it. Or perhaps Hillary, when she’s “coronated”.

Hmm…I don’t know if they could get the rights to that. But I hear Sid Vicious is doing butter commercials now, so the Sex Pistols are probably willing to cut a deal.

Though “God Save the Queen, its a Fascist Regime” might need is lyrics reworked slightly.

“that’s what they do out there, farm stuff”

He is a very different person from Stewart who had no designs on ever doing anything like the Daily Show before he was quite suddenly thrust into it by Jon. And late night TV in general, there tend to be long grace periods for new hosts as they get adjusted. It’s no surprise he’s taken a bit, but I also like him.

I hear Trump is using 'White Riot" in a campaign ad though.

Sid’s been dead for a really long time; that’s Johnny Rotten. But it’s wrong, just wrong, to have him in a commercial. It makes me feel really old.

Oh right…Sid died in the late 70s early 80s. My bad.

To make it even worse, Converse is selling a “Sex Pistols” version of their shoe.

When punk sells out…I believe its one of the signs of impending Apocalypse.

I’m a connoisseur of Converse low tops. I have more pairs in my closet than I care to admit. I was very tempted to get a pair of the Sex Pistols shoes, but then I asked myself: WWSD – What would Sid do?

Set the store on fire?
