Discussion: 'Daily Show' Calls Out Racial Hypocrisy On Super Bowl 50 Quarterbacks (VIDEO)

Discussion for article #245590

Come on now, people in America get treated exactly the same regardless of color, especially by white folk!

…what?

Thanks for reminding me why I stopped watching the Daily Show. How the hell did race come into this now?

If you don’t think race is involved in American futbal–especially the leadership quarterback positionl, you’ve been watchin’ too much soccer. Hilarious episode.

Yes, just ask Supreme Court Justice Roberts.

You often have good comments but you have missed the subtext here. The dominant meme for decades (or perhaps forever) is that White athletes succeed because of smarts, hard work and determination. Black athletes succeed because of natural ability. Before you write your refutation, just think of how the sports media treated the Williams’ sisters in tennis.

Because of their brashness. I disliked John McEnroe even more than the Williams sisters, he is just a flaming asshole, and lots of white people could not stand him. But if he was black, I could not dislike him? Did Arthur Ashe get treated like the Williams sisters? No, he was very well respected. And he was in an era when there was plenty of racism. So I am not buying the BS that I can’t dislike athletes who are brash if they happen to be black because it is “racist”. It’s utter nonsense.

Only for a few people. That’s actually a crock of BS. There have been lots of black QB’s. Warren Moon was one of the best QB’s ever, and an all time favorite of mine. He was tough, smart, team oriented. Great QB. But since he was not a “hot dog”, that means he was not being black enough? Are you implying he was being “white” because he was smart and acted mature on the field? Because that’s pretty racist.

I found Tim Tebow, Brian Bosworth, and many other whites to be quite annoying with their showboat nonsense too.

The knock on Newton has NOTHING to do with race. It’s the hot dog stuff. Some people, like myself, do not like the silly sophomoric nonsense. If you want to call me out on that, no problem. But it’s not a racial thing. There have been, and are still, lots of cocky white athletes I just do not like. To then say if I dislike a cocky black athlete it is “racist”, is in fact “racist”.

Edit: I would also note that several black QB’s have been in Super Bowls, and two have won them. Doug Williams won one in 1988, 18 years ago. There was never a dislike for any of those QB’s from most of America, because they all acted like adults. All those black QB’s were very respected for their ability and smarts. So this is all a lot of nonsense.

Take Seattle two years ago. Russ Wilson is a very respected QB and player. He’s not a hot dog. Yet if I did not like Richard Sherman’s brashness, suddenly it was “racist” because Sherman was somehow acting “black”? Nonsense.

The Daily Show has lost me and lots of others with this almost exclusive focus on race, even going out of their way to get it into the show.

Good reply. You are, however, inserting a lot of straw dog arguments. Having been called an ‘Oreo’ during my college days, I assure you that I’m the last person to accuse anyone of ‘acting White’! Yes: the Williams sisters were ‘brash’, but there have been lots of ‘brash’ superstars.

However, if you go back to the media coverage of the sisters when they were at their peak, it was pretty amazing. There were articles about their overweening dominance and strength and physicality: almost implying that they weren’t really women. On a darker side, this is related to the superhuman aggressor myth that surrounds Black men: an assumption of almost primordial physical strength, that leads cops to assume that a 12 year old is a 20 year old man and shoot him down literally within seconds of arriving on the crime scene.

Well, they are much more muscular than most others, has nothing to do with race. Martina caught a lot of that too, she was quite muscular and stronger than other players. But she was white, yes?

Yes, and many people like myself do no like them. I dislike McEnroe a lot more than the Williams sisters.

I’m not seeing that, unless it’s a big black guy. Did that myth get applied to Arthur Ashe? Warren Moon? No.

Remember that big Russian dude that played in the Rocky movies. Did that play on a myth that all Russians are big scary strong guys? Or maybe the reality is that such people do exist.

Those cops screwed up on the whole approach, no doubt. But I would also note that 12 year old kid was 5’7" and 195 lbs. and was said to have a gun and was pointing it at people. The 911 dispatcher did not say it was a kid, or that the gun was possibly fake. Still no excuse for the piss poor reaction by the cops, but it goes a little deeper than I think you are suggesting. I would also note that is a pretty isolated incident.

Let me just say this my fellow Americans. You should NEVER listen to anyone other than a native born American when it comes to Football or the Super Bowl. I say that as a man that grew up in Europe and I know what a sack of shit this Noah asshole is as well as any other European, Aussie or whatever that comments on the American game of Football. They are trained to hate it before they are trained to piss in a toilet. Been there…seen it.

Look at his dismissive " bash each other and slap butts " comment. Fuck him. American Football is a game of strategy. It’s not a fluid "let it roll " game like European Football or Basketball. Those a are great games too but American Football is …American. It’s our game and I can bet you a dollar to a doughnut most of its international critics don’t know shit about it or understand it as a physical game of chess. If you don’t know the rules and plays you can watch it and you don’t get shit. ( I taught a group of Europeans about it in a Barcelona bar and after they knew a bit they loved the game )

In this case the Daily Show is creating a racial beef to bitch about. How many times have you heard Payton referred to as a “book worm” ? I haven’t and I am a Gator Grad. He’s a damn good QB as Newton is and until this asshole brought up the subject of race all we were looking forward to was some cold beer, pizza, a big screen TV and a good half time show. Now Noah has drug his lame fabrication into it and we can all enjoy.

I basically agree with you, though I think the actual segment was a bit funnier than the TPM summary would suggest (especially the end). I would also make one small qualification to this part of your comment;
“[Peyton] is a damn good QB.” I believe that should read WAS a damn good QB, not “is.” At this point, it’s pretty clear that he sucks, bookworm or not

He’s going to the Super Bowl.

Rex Grossman and Trent Dilfer also went to the Super Bowl. Peyton’s got a great defense. (If he were physically able, this year’s Broncos might be one of the great teams of all time.)

If you have to ask that question - you just dont get it, I don;t really watch football but I watched the playoff game two weeks ago. I knew nothing about Cam Newton and yet what I heard was this guy is famous for dating a stripper. So I did my homework and this guy is awesome - incredibly awesome yet all these jokers can say is he dated a stripper. There is a problem in the media - they love to tear down african american athletes, That;s not an opinion - its a fact

Whoa, man. Whoa.

Maybe you’re used to reading comments on sites such as this, where most contributors are relatively well-educated, informed, and not bigoted. But you should try heading over to Yahoo Sports, for example, and reading the comments on an article about Cam Newton (or any black athlete for that matter). The racism is real, and it’s palpable.

As a general principle, I believe that anyone should be able to comment on any topic, and others ought to be able to judge their comments on their merits rather than being prejudiced against someone because of their background. Diversity of perspective should be viewed as a strength, not a weakness. This is pretty much the underlying motivation behind diversity initiatives in university settings, for example. I find your generalizing comments about Europeans to be in poor taste. The popularity of the NFL games played in London over the past few years serves as evidence that there are indeed people over there who share a love for the game that ought to be respected as valid, even if they don’t share the highly nuanced appreciation for it that you have fostered as a result of your (I assume) American upbringing.

I hope you don’t find my reply to be overly antagonizing. I just wanted to share my thoughts, and I hope you and yours have a fun Super Bowl weekend!

Heard from who, some blog?

If you know nothing about football, you should not be commenting. Cam Newton has been a highly recognized SUPERSTAR since his college days. He won the Heisman and was the #1 Draft pick. There has rarely been a QB that can combine running and passing like him. And everyone recognizes him for that, not because of who he dates. In fact, this is the first I heard that he dates a stripper. And no one is trying to tear him down based on race, that is absurd.

I just did some google. Turns out she is not a stripper, she is a former stripper. Who cares? Where did you get that this is how most of the sports world views him? That’s nuts.

No, it’s complete nonsense. I could list a thousand black athletes that no one is trying to take down, where on earth do you get this stuff from? And I could list white athletes the media has gone after for various reasons, and I don’t think that is racial either. Controversial people create their own controversy, regardless of race.

And frankly, I can’t stand Tom Brady and his pretty boy image. I respect him as possibly the best QB ever, but I don’t like him. And he’s white. And him dating a model is always talked about.

I would also note that Cam Newton gets the second most amount of endorsements of any other player in the NFL (Manning is forst), and he has not even won a Super Bowl.

Please explain how that is trying to “drag him down”, because that’s not how you drag someone down. Oh, he deserves those endorsements, I’m just making the point that he is being promoted, the complete opposite of “dragged down”.

You’re a trip.

While maybe I haven’t often seen Manning referred to as a bookworm, his purported “braininess” is emphasized ad nauseum. It sometimes even seems a phrenological response to his monstrously yuuuge head. He is more of a tapeworm, anally analyzing tape.

In any case, I’ll have to root against him if only because it will make his buddy Poppa John grunt and groan.
