Discussion: Curt Schilling Speaks Out After ESPN Firing: ‘I’m Not Transphobic’ (AUDIO)

He’s not a transphobe. He just plays one in public.

I don’t think those words mean what you think they mean.

Just a variant on the very tired, very old, very familiar “I’m not a racist, but ni&&ers, amirite?”

No. Just go sell your crap on fox news. The job is waiting for you. Don’t turn back, follow Trump. Do what you do.

It’s always disappointing to find out that a sports idol is a complete douchnozzle. In the case of Schilling, he has worked hard to destroy the positive memory of his accomplishments in baseball, because he can’t keep from spewing whatever silly shit pops into his head.

Athletes should stick to athletics, and leave the social commentary to others. Having the ability to throw a 90 mph fastball, and to follow it up with a breaking ball that falls off the table does not mean that your random thoughts are relevant, accurate, or worthy of expression.

Curt Schilling? Do people really care what this guy thinks or whether he is employed to yack-yack-yack on a TV sports channel? Really? Is this where our national conversation is being held? The excess coverage on this non-event is just pathetic.

Schilling defended himself as an open-minded person in the Sirius interview, arguing the controversy over the post was overblown.

The Open Minded But Just Misunderstood Hall of Fame:

“I’m not racist.” – David Duke.

“I’m not sexist.” – Bobby Riggs.

“I’m not carnivorous.” – Jeffrey Dahmer.

“I’m not transphobic.” – Curt Schilling.

I’ve never understood this line of reasoning. Do only professional sociologists get to comment on social issues? There are plenty of athletes (and actors, another group often told to “stick to acting”) who are at least as educated and passionate about current issues as any of us.

My message to the Shillings and Singhs and McCarthys and Gibsons of the world is “stop being a racist/sexist/bigoted/anti-science shitweasel,” not “stop talking in public.” To the extent a person is granted a megaphone in our society through skill in their public profession, let them use that megaphone to make the world a better place if they can. And if they turn out to be racist/sexist/bigoted/anti-science shitweasel, then we can just call them out on it like we do any other shitweasel.

He’s not transphobic or homophobic – he’s not scared of them, he just hates them. Jeez, get it right!

Way to support your son’s awesome work at his school. What kind of dad who is really proud of his son starting an LGBT club at his school shares a meme like that? Wait, I know. A bad one.

Ok, so he’s not transphobic and instead just a dumb, compulsive asshole with poor skills in judgement.

Maybe he’s not, but he’s definitely a bigot.

Swell.

Who’s saying that?

Schilling is one screwed up dude.

Dude, zip it. We don’t care about your penis.

Ewwww…

People need to learn that being bigoted doesn’t simply mean “I want to lynch those subhuman pieces of scum.”

Agreed. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar comes to mind immediately. I don’t care about his athletic accomplishment, though I hear he’s one of the all-time greats in that department. Sports repulses me. But I have found him a powerful and insightful commentator, so I think the world is a better place for having had him in it.

Point taken. The problem is that most athletes spend their entire lives developing their athletic skills, and rarely do they dedicate a lot of effort to fine-tuning their skills in logic. In addition, they end up being surrounded by sycophants who encourage them to think that they are above mere mortals simply because they can make use of the accidents of nature that make them highly sought after. I’m pretty sure that I could dunk a basketball if I was 7 feet tall and 300 pounds, but that doesn’t make my thoughts on the Dodd-Frank bill illuminating.

In the case of Schilling, this isn’t the first time that he has stepped on his dick in public, so maybe he ought to learn to stop doing it since he clearly doesn’t understand why his statements are so wrong.

Curt Schilling is now formally making himself totally toxic - and totally about as employable as John Rocker.
