He is mine and I love him. Did you know he is E.E. Cummings? But properly capitalized.

I admire this man so much – he’s one of the best. I hope he’s on the mend soon.

I use to like e. e. cummings’ poetry until I learned this about him:

He may have been a good poet but he was a rotten human being with a warped view of the people around him.

I saw this at Rawstory earlier and before I read why he was hospitalized I about had a heart attack.

Stay well, sir. We need you - you are perhaps the most moral voice in America.

This is why Vladimir Nabokov was right - we shouldn’t know so much about the private lives of artists. Their art should speak for itself and say everything we need to know about the artist.

I’m sorry I ever found out about Tolstoy’s life. As a writer he sits on the right hand of god. As person no and I could have let that be. Same with Robert Frost and any number of artists. Wallace Stevens - greatest poet America has produced; horrible politics.

Politics is one thing. Being a bigot with a entitled sense of superiority is another thing altogether in my book but I catch your drift. I try not to put any one person up on a pedestal; that way I avoid disappointment.

You’ve been much wiser than I have in that regard, then. There are people whose work I find transcendent; I used to, but now I don’t tend to put them on pedestals. I do their work.

I understand what you mean. But, people are also products of their time. Everyone’s favorite cynic Menken was extremely anti-Semitic. The list goes on too.

Oh, now you have blown a hole through another thing I loved. I’m with Tena. Artists should be allowed to get away with murder. They never claimed or asked to be pure. In fact, the opposite.

If artists were held to particular standards of morality, many of the film makers we’ve enjoyed would be unknown. They’re all flawed and maybe people involved in film making most of all.

Yes indeed. And more than a few composers as well.

This is why I respected Elena Ferrante’s decision to try to remain behind her nom de plume and got so mad at the man who just couldn’t take it and had to find out who she was. I refuse to read the articles so I know who she is but I still don’t know her name - I blocked it out. She’s Elena and goddamn it if any artist ever told us everything about themselves in their art it’s Elena.

An art I follow closely along with books is film. The industry is full of sleazebags whose films we’ve been anxious to see, but I do think criticism of their personal lives is being factored in to any discussion of the worthiness of their films these days. Do we support Woody Allen as much as we used to? I hope not.

Anyway, if you can find a way to get me the Dallas News article about Russian money flowing to Rs, I’d be grateful forever and to quote 6 gennaio, molto gentile. Got a jones for this thing.
