Repugs like Cruz love to bring up the “Dixiecrats” who indeed were largely Southern, largely racist, and constituted the extreme right wing of the Democratic party prior to 1965. What they never mention is that following passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, and various other programs of the Johnson Administration, the racist white Southerners bolted the Democratic party and became Repuglicans, something Richard Nixon capitalized upon with his “Southern Strategy.” Basically former Dixicrats transformed the Repuglicans away from the image of Abraham Lincoln to the embodiment of the image of Donald Trump. This is why they are so repugnant!
