Discussion: 'Creeping Sharia' Is Creeping Back Into Conversation

Discussion for article #236279

Either it’s the most thorough conspiracy every devised to deceive the public or an incredible mass hysteria. Somewhere in there are people who might be suffering from brain injuries or a lifetime of developmental issues that at one time in the history of English would have been called “retardation”.

As near as I can tell, the only “Sharia” law, is the law imposed by conservatives who, in their reverence of fear, ignorance and hatred, want to deny rights to anyone who doesn’t look like them, think like them, or behave like them.

What will Limbaugh try next, to boost his flagging ratings, “Dancing with the Stats?”

A corporation, worshipped by right wingers, providing products that meets the needs of a certain demographic in order to retain market share = “caving to Sharia Law”. The jokes write themselves, folks.

Limbaugh maintains that the imposition of Sharia will somehow be used to force businesses to support same-sex marriages?

Evidently he is thinking of a branch of Islam I’m not familiar with, the one where Sharia mandates same-sex marriages?

And Allen West is upset that a Walmart store decided to start stocking some Halal meat products in order to better serve their customer base? I thought these folks supported the free market.

But I guess he’ll next cite the fact that half the products in my local grocery store have been certified kosher is evidence of a vast conspiracy to impose Jewish dietary laws on the entire country.

Sure is amazing how the same “Conservatives” who bellyache about Sharia are the exact same people trying to force their perverted Christian Dominionism on the rest of us!

Sometimes I wonder if any of the Frightwing TEAliban Rightie nutjobs who promote the Ten Commandments so vitriolically understand that they’re advocating Sharia law.
What passes for Republican logic: “We must impose Christianity on every facet of our political and social lives in this country so ‘sharia law’ can be avoided.” Oh gawwd’…Right Wingers are a special kind of stupid. You can’t achieve that kind of stupid without working on it a lot.

Let’s convince these Rightie gasbags and GOP Baggers and Cons that gun ownership inevitably leads to sharia law…and enjoy the heads a’ poppin freakout.

(*As an aside, it did make me laugh when Glenn Beck repeatedly referred to the “taint of Sharia” in one of his slobbering rants.)

“SHARIA” is the new “COMMUNISM!!!” buzzword used to scare the yokels into voting against their own interests.
In their drive to return to the 1880’s (no that’s not a typo) the Oligarchs need something to scare the beejeesus out of the mouth-breathers. Since it is so difficult them get them to “put down the beer and turn off the game” long enough to get their attention you need a “scary foreign-word” to get them riled up.
It also nicely dovetails with their RACISM as only a “Sand Ni(CLANG!)” would approve of anything like “SHARIA”.
Since the dimwits don’t have any idea what Sharia is, you can define it as anything you want and they will nod blankly and piss themselves on command when you utter it darkly while pointing to anything you want to condemn.
Unfortunately, it works.
Goebbels would be so proud…

OK, enough already! I mean sure, these stories are good entertainment for us to make fun of how ridiculous the right is and all, but when is enough , enough? Are there ANY leaders in the Republican party, or out in the media, to put a stop to this ridiculousness? John McCain came the closest recently when he mocked Abbott, but there really needs to be someone on that side to put the hammer down. I realize this crazy talk sells to a sliver of crazy out there. Apparently the money to be made from these nuts is more important than looking out for the good of the country and trying to tackle real things that matter. Just think if these folks devoted their time to promoting infrastructure improvements. Or education. Or campaign finance. OK, I’m going too far down the delusional rabbit hole myself, i’d better stop.

I wonder of they even know what halal means. I don’t mind eating Kosher either, in fact, I tend to think of it as higher quality, whether or not that is factual.

RE: "I have long predicted this administration will cut back our speech if it offends Islam.” - Jeanine Pirro of Fox News

The Obama administration has been around for over six years without doing that.

If Obama leaves office without ever outlawing speech which “offends Islam,” will Pirro resign from punditry?

Hey Republicans, Baggers and assorted Frightwing Nutbags! This just in:
[I just discovered that the World Domination Califate Muslim Headquarters at the White House doesn’t want to take over the country and impose Sharia Law. They lost takeover rights to The World Satanic Temple in a poker game…and the WST sold those rights to the Trilateral Commission for fluoridation rights in Texas. The Illuminati and Bilderbergers will act as partners and advisers on how to run the country from now on. At this writing, the Scientologists are just pissed at being left out…so far. Stay tuned for updates, Yours in God and FOX and the GOP, Alex Jones: Infowars]

I think there’s something psychological at work here, or perhaps sociological. It’s not completely political.

The US is a very safe place to live. Crime is way down. We’re very safe from foreign threats. We’re healthier (living longer, at least). Cars are much safer than they used to be. But people are afraid – afraid of young black men, of the US military moving into Texas, of Sharia law being imposed in the US (in the South, to boot). So many people are afraid of things that just aren’t real that these fears are exerting a solid and observable effect on our politics.

It’s as if there’s a palpable fear that people are trying to hang on something, anything. We can say that it’s the fault of Fox News or talk radio, but I’m not sure that’s enough of an explanation. I trust the NY Times – not blindly (the specters of Jayson Blair and Judith Miller), but in general, I trust them. I don’t think they could convince me that Sharia is about to come to my state (New York). I think that people have to be open to that kind of paranoia, and it’s the openness that’s new. I suspect that Fox News, talk radio, and the GOP are opportunists who profit from the existence of that openness, rather than the creators of it.

A while back, there were some stories floating around the net about how pollution from leaded gasoline had damaged people, and how that damage made them more violent and increased the crime rate. I don’t know if that was true or not. If was one of those stories in which media people passed it around because it was really interesting, but experts were on opposite sides. In any event, we’re now seeing near epidemics of depression and anxiety. Is it possible something about the way we live now is making us depressed, anxious, and more paranoid, and that those effects are distorting our politics?

(Obviously, it’s super important to state explicitly that this is pure speculation, with no proof, and that I don’t understand the field and am almost certainly wrong. So it would be extremely unwise for any of the 12 people who will read this to pick it up and run with it. But I do wonder.)

I’m increasingly convinced that the days of moderates, establishment GOP and Old Guard Republicans that go back to a time where some semblance of sanity remained within the party are officially over. A perfect storm of new media propaganda, confused old people, a growing alternate reality manufactured by Fox News, and the GOP handing the lunatics a microphone (the Tea party) who actually got other lunatics elected has taken a once viable party and morphed it into something more like a cult, but for conspiracy theorists. How the f–k do people still buy into this shit? This isn’t just a few lone nuts anymore. These people hold high offices and I’d be willing to bet we all know a few people that follow this garbage.

Those days have been gone for at least 30 years.
