Discussion for article #228675
Gotta love the fact that student IDs aren’t allowable but concealed gun permits are. No politics behind that one – eh?
Open carry without an ID in Texass under the SLIME ABBOTT but you can not vote…Abbott and walleyed walker are the scourge of the earth and must be sent wheeling back home to rot…
GOTV BURKE AND WENDY DAVIS…
Wisconsin has a circular process whereby you need a certified birth certificate to get a driver’s license or state ID, and you need ID to get a birth certificate!
To get a birth certificate without a driver’s license, you need two forms of ID from the “other” menu and a US Passport is one of the possible two. That’s right, a US Passport is insufficient identification to get a certified Wisconsin birth certificate.
Oh yeah, that’ll be $20 for regular service by mail or in person, in Madison. You can also pay $20 extra for expedited service in Madison. Or you can apply by fax, which costs $40 for expedited service, plus a $6 credit card fee, plus $19 for UPS delivery.
So tell me again why the voter ID law isn’t a glorified poll tax.
I forgot to mention that Wisconsin outsources its driver’s license production to a private company, who mails you your new ID, with special anti-faking gold inlay and whatnot, in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, they print you a temporary ID on an 8x11 sheet of paper.
That’s right, for all the rigamarole they put you through to get identified, there’s still a glaring loophole where a forger could craft his own fake temporary ID with a laptop and bubble jet printer.
There is no right the GOP won’t attempt to subvert. Nothing is excluded, especially if it interferes with the GOP’s ultimate goal: the elimination of taxes for the wealthy.
I am happy
Hummm, what do Texas and Wisconsin even have in common? Surely losing control of the government isn’t more important to them than protecting every individuals right to vote.
We need Texas badly, when we win there, it’s game over, checkmate and adios to the Republican Party. Wisconsin is just cheese on that steak.
I’m fascinated that the Supremes who dissented against the emergency stay were all worried about the absentee ballots, but had no concern about the people who would be faced with less than three weeks to get conforming ID, even though the process for issuing that ID may not be clear.
Why has no one challenged these laws based on sex discrimination? Here in Florida, we need a drivers license or state ID to vote. Because of the “real ID” War on Terror ™ law, a woman who has been married/divorced needs to provide a birth certificate and certified documentation of every name change. Paying for copies of marriage/divorce certificates when men don’t have to is a poll tax on women.
As the new GAO report shows conclusively, both the intent and the effect of these ID laws is to suppress the votes of young people and people of color.
Smart people already knew this.
Now even Republicans have to admit the truth—if they can stop lying long enough.
If there was never a more obvious choice for the real reason why the Right didn’t like Eric Holder, DOJ going after Texas voter ID laws is it.
Great news.
Wrong.
To the Tea-Baggers the ONLY RIGHT is THEIR 2nd Amendment right (not YOURS, only THEIRS.)
Everything else is just EBOMEBOLANISM!!!
(That is the new, shorter (because long words are “too hard”) term for: OBAMA, BENGHAZI, EBOLA, IRS, MUSLIM, COMMUNISM.)
This has convinced me to crack open a bottle of red tonight and celebrate…not that I needed much convincing…
So Chief Justice Roberts voted with Sotomayor, Ginsburg, and Kagan, huh? Cue the “Impeach John Roberts” campaign by rightwingers outraged at the Earl Warren-like treason to the conservative cause of maintaining rights for white people only.
How Un-American can one be to attempt to prevent folks from voting Well I guess you have to be a Repuk who can’t win any other way
Oh yeah, Wisconsin married women with their husbands’ last names, will also need their marriage certificates. Wisconsin charges the same for that as for a birth certificate: $20 for regular delivery, $40 for expedited service in person, in Madison, or $40 for expedited fax service, plus $6 credit card fee, plus $19 for UPS shipping.
Also, just like the birth certificate, Wisconsin requires a driver’s license or 2 other forms of ID to get the marriage certificate! As with the birth certificate, one of the 2 other ID can be a US Passport, but a passport alone is insufficient ID to get a certified Wisconsin marriage certificate.
