When America was great about half its population was severely limited in their employment prospects. They could be teachers, nurses, secretaries or (if they were young and sufficiently attractive in the later years of America’s Greatness) airliner cabin attendants. If they decided to marry for some reason, they were expected to leave the workforce.
America was great when children could be put to work and labor unions knew that their place was to say “yes” to whatever management suggested. America was great when her air and rivers and coastal waters were free to be used as disposal areas for whatever garbage Industry needed to dispose.
