Discussion: Cosby Detailed How He Kept Affairs Secret In Deposition 10 Years Ago

Discussion for article #238556

“I think I’m a pretty decent reader of people and their emotions in these romantic sexual things, whatever you want to call them.”

That’s what a lot of rapists believe about themselves, I imagine.

What an abusive sexist pig. It’s fascinating to read Ta-Nehisi Coates’ article in the Atlantic about Cosby’s conservatism from back in 2008. He quotes August Wilson about Cosby attacking the lower class: “A billionaire attacking poor people for being poor. Bill Cosby is a clown. What do you expect?”

Looks like Autumn Jackson probably is his illegitimate daughter after all.

Cosby has always chased women and at one time he didn’t have to drug them. He played clubs in San Francisco in the 70s and 80s including one my husband worked in at the time, and it was no secret that he was always on the prowl, no drugging involved. He charmed them, he seduced them, and they were more than happy for the opportunity to return the favor. A friend of mine protested saying, but I’m married, he said, so am I, well, that did it. He talked her down.

And I think it is reasonable to assume that if Cosby was being accused as a simple serial cheater, sans drugging, this whole thing would blow over and his legacy would have been only lightly scuffed and not deeply tarnished as it is by his diabolical drug-rapes of scores of women. Too bad, so sad for Bill, but I feel for his victims. A string of civil suits that drain his bank accounts would be good to see.

He seems to know full well, according to his explanations, that he had to hide as much as he could from the long suffering wife. The image was of a team, with one occasionally faulty player, but a team nevertheless, acting as philanthropists, curating art and just acting as a model of marital longevity.

…which makes this side of Cosby so despicable–the calculations, the callousness to the women, his objectification of intimacy to the extreme, all of the deception and intimidation he concocted. It’s so in contrast with the public image he so carefully constructed. It’s the behavior of a sociopath, imho.

Shouldn’t they be called “alleged affairs”? Since his description conflicts with the plaintiffs’ claim of rape, both should be called “alleged.”

I walk her out. She does not look angry. She does not say to me, don’t ever do that again. She doesn’t walk out with an attitude of a huff, because I think that I’m a pretty decent reader of people and their emotions in> these romantic sexual things, whatever you want to call them.

All he at this point is covering for his wife of 50 years, I believe. He is trying to portray her as being blind and naive. I think not, she was in it for $$$$$$ and he is trying to use her as a dump of those $$$$$, so that he may shield same for himself.

I’m not sure I buy that he had to start drugging women to get them to comply as opposed to deciding he preferred it for some reason. Some sick reason. Perhaps we will never know.

Possibly more hurtful to Bill will be the fact that a) few will view him as a moral authority and b) few will want to revisit his past work.

I have a couple old comedy albums of his and it makes me sick to look at them. Contemplating chucking them.

Trying to clarify: The women he was most recently involved with were not in his company because it was planned night of consensual sex. He had to drug them in order to have sex with them. Back in the day they flocked to him.

You might have the comedy album where he did a skit about being in his car on a steep hill in San Francisco and rolling backward into San Francisco Bay. He spent a lot of time here, and we all thought it was charming.

“He acknowledged he obtained them with the intention of giving them to young women he wanted to have sex with.”

So drugging women to have sex with them is not a sex crime?

I think our President said it best:

“If you give a woman — or a man for that matter — without his or her knowledge, a drug, and then have sex with that person without consent, that’s rape.”

I don’t know about that “long-suffering” part. She seems to be enabler #2 (after Cosby’s drug supplier that is).

Maybe I should have put quotation marks around long suffering wife because she has shown herself to be an enabler. I give props to Jennie Sanford and Silda Spitzer for walking away

It’s called “Wonderfulness” with a picture of him on a go-kart on the cover. I grew up on his comedy as Bill Cosby Himself was on heavy rotation in my house as I grew up. I watched the Cosby Show for most of its run (until my teenage rebellion conflicted with the moralizing of the show). I really didn’t want any of this to be true …

True I’m sure they did more so than recently. Still the allegations stretch back into the early 1970s. So, something about this m.o. appealed to him above and beyond just wanting to have sex.
