You shoot my son in the butt, I shoot yours in the chest. That’s the Chicago Way.

I bet every man ever shot by police WISHED they had gotten shot with a BB gun…Coulda been worse too, this ass-jack could have used an AK-47 for dramatics…

Aggravated assault? Why not attempted murder? The way this gun and its ammo looks you probably can kill an 11 year old with it, right? I’m confused.

I think I need to know velocities to understand this. The last time I was shot with a bb gun, there was no medivac.

Geez you have to be kidding me? What the f is wrong with these people?

I have a Crossman BB/Pellet rifle that is surprisingly powerful. Ten pumps are supposed to toss a 5 grain pellet at just over 600fps. From past barn cleaning episodes I know these pellets are instant death on mice, pigeons and rats.

They can pierce steel as thick as that found on most galvanized garbage cans so I’d imagine they could easily penetrate enough to kill a human.

Dear Gun nuts, Don’t shoot people with BB guns. I have seen the damage up close and personal. While it may not always happen IT DOES HAPPEN.

Should have used a real gun and claimed self defense.

It’s the American way.

Punched into the kid’s heart.

Yeah, a Crossman will more than put Ralphie’s eye out.

The Old Testament “eye for an eye” mentality –

To penetrate the skin and go all the way to the heart, this jackass must have been about a foot away when he shot.

So I’d be curious to know what he shot the kid with. Sounds like BB gun is too wide a range of devices to form an informed opinion.

missed that part. way over the line.

Lets not get carried away here. My son’s daisy bb gun would have trouble killing a sparrow.

Check out the BB guns at Walmart.

Here is one for under 40 bucks that I’m certain could kill someone with a chest or neck shot:

Experience the ultimate thrill of shooting with the Crosman Recruit Multi Pump .177 Caliber Pellet. Featuring adjustable stock and rear sight, this BB air rifle is excellent for backyard bench shooting with both BBs and Pellets. The adjustable stock allows for a customizable length of pull for the individual shooter. With a BB velocity of 680fps and pellet velocity of 645 fps, it gives you the ultimate shooting experience. With an easy to use pump mechanism you can expect hours of fun using the carbine air rifle as you shoot papers targets, shatter blasts and breakable targets
Robot or human?

@horrido “Lets not get carried away here. My son’s daisy bb gun would have trouble killing a sparrow.”

Yes, but most people are going to be using the more powerful ones. They are super cheap and available in most states without any sort of background checks.

There are even models available for deer hunting and any adult can buy them.

Don’t be so certain. Distance and shot placement are everything. The standard, classic Daisy BB gun will certainly kill a bird as small as a sparrow. Just about any bird the size of a pigeon or a robin would be killed at ~15 feet or under with a shot through the eye or directly into the chest. The hitting power of a BB on a bird that small is devastating.

A squirrel would stand a far better chance of survival due to pelt and mammalian musculature.

There is also a wide range of performance for compressed air guns shooting a .177 caliber BB or pellet. Keep in mind, further, that at these velocities the surface area of .177 is very significantly smaller than a .22, so penetration is no small stretch.

When I was a kid, one of my friends shot another friend with a BB gun using compressed CO2 at a range of ~15 feet. The BB (not pellet) lodged under the skin of his arm and had to be cut out by a doctor after we (his parents also) attempted to squeeze it back out of the entry hole.

There’s a legal limit on the velocity a standard air gun can produce, which varies State by State. When I was younger, it was 880 fps in Illinois. Today, nearly 40 years later, that has been reduced for general public consumption.

There are, however, enthusiast air guns for extreme precision target competition. Those generally achieve higher velocities, some of which can exceed 1000 fps, and they can also come in .22 and .25 calibers (which are usually pellets; if BBs in those calibers are available, they are rare).

So, a lot of critical information is missing from this news bite. But, if the guy was using a target grade .177 air gun, implied to be a handgun by the photo (which is probably generic stock photo used by TPM to make it look Very Frightening), and it was using a CO2 cartridge, it could well have been pushing 600-800 fps at what was probably close range, I’d imagine ~10 feet or under given the rest of the story.

The guy is a flaming fucking sociopath and I hope they convict him for attempted murder. He deserves to do time behind bars for something this fucking stupid, premeditated and malicious. If I was prosecuting I would explore all possibilities to convict for use of a firearm during the commission of felonious, premeditated assault on a child with intent to do grievous harm. That should net him 10 years minimum, and be pretty light for what he did.

Hey, you didn’t miss it. I had to find a story that wasn’t written by the AP to get it.
