Discussion: Conservative Journalist Charles Johnson Says He's Defying 'Illegal Subpoena' In Miss

Hell for that matter, I’d like to see Governor Brown show up with a county sheriff in tow and pull that fucker out of his house.

Jer-ry! Jer-ry! Jer-ry! Jer-ry! Jer-ry! Jer-ry!

He may be a jerk, but he’s solidly on the side of press freedom here. District Attorneys and Attorneys General should not (and generally do not) have the power to compel journalists to reveal sources, methods or information. Looks like the subpoena and the associated gag order are overreach on the part of the AG on both 1st and 5th Amendment grounds. Johnson’s goose will get cooked, but there’s no reason to ignore the constitution to do so.

I was really curious about that. There are agreements among “many” states to enforce each other’s subpoenas, the one site I found said. Dunno if that applies here but personally I’d hate to have a checkerboard of bench warrants across the country to consider when I was making travel plans.

The sheriff with jurisdiction could try refusing to enforce the subpoena, but then the DA from MS could simply go to court in California and show cause why the sheriff should be compelled to obey (I believe it’s a writ of mandamus?).

There’s no reason to fight this, the man is being legally subpoenaed and needs to appear.

Sometimes I think TPM really needs to quit with their “the media is the problem!” stories if they’re going to keep pimping shit like this.

“Journalist”?

“Do all my journalism”? Has this weak-chinned fool ever stepped into a journalism classroom at any point, ever? This guy makes O’Keefe look like freakin’ Mike Wallace for crying out loud.

I do believe the long arm of the law can reach him in California. He’s pulling a Snowden.

No, I’m aware of how it could be worse. I refer you next door to Alabama.

Too bad for Charles C Johnson that he lives in California. This looks like the opening piece of a series of stories culminating in the GOTP coming at MS AG Jim Hood with everything they’ve got, maybe even running someone like Johnson in opposition.

Hey, you may not need to be an attorney to be MS AG. Maybe all you need is a gray General’s costume.

Except this f^cking self-centered toad can be found, bound, and stuffed into a 4x8 without much effort.

You seem to have a fairly tenuous grasp on the First and Fifth Amendments. The Constitution doesn’t say anything about ignoring subpoenas. Once he gets in court or before a grand jury he can refuse to answer questions on the basis of First or Fifth Amendment protections, but he ignores a subpoena at his peril. You should perhaps find out what “subpoena” means.
