Discussion: Congress, White House Resolve Gov't Shutdown Threats Over O'Care Subsidies

I read this like 3 times and this seems to involve trusting the Republicans. What’s wrong with that concept?

Doesn’t really matter. It’s on the republicans best interest to keep those payments flowing. Now if Trump double crosses them… well, then they are screwed, because voters will hold the GOP representatives accountable, and the election is next year, and people will be pretty upset by november if they didn’t have coverage all year,

It’s a long way to Friday. Countdown to the GOP Conservatard freakout.

We could all be ashes by then if the marmalade moron lights off a nuke to squeak it into his 100 day to-do list.

yeah… if it’s not specifically IN WRITING and IN THE LEGISLATION you’re proving yourself as fucking dumb as the stereotypical Cheeto Donnie supporter…

Well, to be fair, it’s literally what we’re stuck doing anyway. You always have to wait for the proof in the pudding. The advantage here is being able to get out in front of the cameras, say they agreed to “X” and then, if they renege on “X”, you get to go right back to the media to lambaste them mercilessly as liars, cheats, bullies, hypocrites, etc., block the funding bill, let the gov’t shut down and enjoy watching the public blame the GOP.

The problem, if anywhere, comes in the Dems’ consistent and mindboggling failure to do the lambasting well.

Losing!!!
Trounce is taking a beating.

He totally pussied out on this after all his stupid threats that were just hot air. No subsidy withholding, no shutdown, no wall. no balls.

He is funding O-care not replacing it, yooooooge difference.

He got his ass/coulo handed to him by Mexico this week and lost a battle over tuna that cost us near two hundred million dollars not pesos.

The wall is not being built and he’ll be lucky to get some walkie talkies and a set of binoculars that Mexico also won’t pay for.

He lost yet another court case, getting to be too many to remember them all.

He never promised to be governing by the hated EO but that is all that he does. That isn’t winning, it’s capitulating and weak.

If this were baseball, it would only be the top of the 1st inning and Trounce would already be losing by over 10 runs.
We may have to institute the mercy rule.

“…though this week some Democrats were waffling on whether they would shut down the government over them.” Which Democrats specifically? I’d like names. They should be called out. Perhaps a primary challenge is in order. No waffling, damnit! We hold all the cards for once. Make them force the issue, use it as a cudgel in the 2018 elections. Remind people the Republicans are coming for their insurance.

Chuck Schumer: “It’s nice to see the President caving like a pussy once again on his empty threats…”

Just give that knife a little twiiiist…

It was. Otherwise, somebody needs to call cyber security.

Well, we don’t really hold all the cards but otherwise I’m with you. We certainly get nothing by waffling here or on anything.

As others have said, I will wait until the legislation is filed, voted on, and signed before I believe it.

But good that we have Schumer et al saying clearly Trump caved on this. So if they (the GOP/Trump) renege, shut it down and fuck the Cheeto. Call him out as a liar and a cheat who broke the deal. Make them rightfully own it.

Disagree totally - here the Dems pretty much hold all the cards. Ryan and McConnell know well they need a ton of Ds, or the govt shuts down - for which they (Ryan and Mitch) will take the blame.

Meanwhile, some Republicans pointed to the legal case as reason for the White House not to continue the subsidies.

“The Constitution provides that ‘No money may be drawn from the Treasury, but in consequence of Appropriations made by Law.’ Congress has made no appropriation for Obamacare cost sharing reduction payments,” Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC), chairman of the Republican Study Committee, said in a statement. “Therefore, we believe making these payments without congressional approval is both clearly illegal and unconstitutional, as the district court held in House v. Price.”

Yeah well the GOP has all branches of government now. They could stop the subsidies yet havent.
Seems all they do is bluster with bullshit. They don’t seem to have anything else.

As for the WH/GOP cave, this is promising (so far). The problem is we will be dealing with threats like this for at least the next 2 years.
But I know, I know; both Parties are the same.

I can pretty much guess which democrats are waffling like Joe Manchin. This is pretty clear cut, those subsidies are for the poorest, and republicans are saying let them die or we will shut everything down. Seems like no brainier to me

Senate Democrats should continue to make the ACA’s Cost-Sharing Reductions a priority, and shut down the gov’t if they aren’t inluded in the budget. No “promise” from the Trump administration can be trusted, especially if it isn’t backed by legislation and allocated funding.

Rep. Mark Warner (R-NC) makes my case for me:

“The Constitution provides that ‘No money may be drawn from the Treasury, but in consequence of Appropriations made by Law.’ Congress has made no appropriation for Obamacare cost sharing reduction payments,” Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC), chairman of the Republican Study Committee, said in a statement. “Therefore, we believe making these payments without congressional approval is both clearly illegal and unconstitutional, as the district court held in House v. Price.”

Without funds appropriated for CSR in the budget, Congressional Republicans will keep fighting it in court - and Trump will either keep taking CSR payments hostage as a bargaining chip, or just stop paying them out of pure mercurial vindictiveness.

Make sure CSR funding is appropriated in the government budget, Chuck, or shut it down.

I didn’t mean ‘all the cards’ in the sense of all the cards, but only in this instance where them blowing up the exchanges by withholding the subsidies is a win/win for us as long as we don’t cooperate. They blow em up, 2018 becomes ma tsunami (it may anyway), they back down O’care lives on. They kill it they give us an enormous weapon on which to run in 2018. They back down we deny them the one legislative triumph they’ve been promising for 8 years. In this one narrow instance we hold all the cards.
