Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced an agreement to hold separate votes on a “clean” Homeland Security funding bill and on a bill to block President Barack Obama’s immigration executive actions.

Good. And that will pass the Senate, then it will be all on Boehner on whether or not he tosses the GOP the massive anvil on the entire issue.

Boehner has no choice but to schedule a vote on both bills. Whether he does it this week or drags it into next week, the result is a foregone conclusion. Businesses are desperately trying to work through the backlog from the West Coast port strike and cannot afford customs delays.

Hahaha…turns out it’s much easier to play games in the minority than to actually govern. Hilarous.

If Obama’s actions unconstitutional, well, impeach him. Please, go ahead. Don’t talk, shoot. Har har har.

Hello, chammy.

Yet having to govern is not stopping Boehner’s spokesman and Senator Sessions from blaming the stalemate on the president and his “overreach.”

Hard-Ball Harry Reid:

Reid insisted, remarkably, that Senate Democrats wouldn’t allow a vote without a commitment from Boehner to bring up a “clean” DHS funding bill in the House.

“We can’t do it alone. It’s a bicameral legislature. Unless Boehner’s in on the deal, it won’t happen,” Reid told reporters.

Michael Steel, a spokesman for Boehner, wouldn’t commit to bringing up the clean DHS bill on Tuesday, instead demanding that Senate Democrats act to fund the department. House Republicans are scheduled to meet on Wednesday morning to discuss what to do.

“The Speaker has been clear: the House has acted, and now Senate Democrats need to stop hiding,” Steel said in an email. “Will they continue to block funding for the Department of Homeland Security or not?”

Steel has to say that because the House GOP wants whatever gets passed (and signed) to be a Republicans-only bill and thus a Win for the GOP. Whatever the Senate sends to the House will pass, but with Democratic votes–which Teh Base will call “compromise” and will score as a loss. But Boehner will have no choice. He’s screwed as both the Speaker and as a Face of the GOP.

Hard. Ball.

The TEA caucus has to be losing their minds.

President Obama Vetos Keystone XL Pipeline!

You know I was upset that the Dems didn’t hold the Senate in 2014 but the way this is working out the Republicans are on the hot seat. They have both houses of government and still can’t get anything passed.

I have an idea, how about a clean immigration bill. The senate passed one last year but the house wouldn’t hold a vote. How about voting on that bill. Obama said he would sign it. Immigration problem solved.

The veto won’t last. The President really wants to sign off on the pipeline but on his terms.

Seconded.

And on that “overreach” thing, too few Dems actually know that’s bs. Lawrence O’Donnell spent days last fall looking for someone to show him some part of some statute that gives the President the authority to do all this action does; no Democrat could. But he finally had an immigration expert on (gotta wonder if his delay on that was for attention – the right wing ate up his “No Dem can tell me!” schtick) who pointed to the precise part of the 1986 law that authorizes it. Here’s the transcript of that show (search for Muzaffar Chishti to get to the pertinent segment):

So now we can let all our Dem reps and Senators know that when the immigration bill itself comes up, they can vote “no” with a clear conscience. And fercrissake, somebody tell Chris Matthews; he’s really annoying on this topic.

I don’t believe that. I think he’s been looking for a reason to turn it down for a long time. He originally wanted the court cases to play itself out first. But the bill the Rethugs just sent him, that they rushed through the House and Senate, ensured that he would be able to offer them nothing but his veto pen for trying to bum rush him into approving it. It’ll still play out in the courts over the next few years over issues particular to the environment, eminent domain and tribal treaties. So the next President will also likely have a say on the issue going forward, but with enough public pressure remaining in place, there’s a good chance it will be nixed altogether in years to come.
