Discussion: Colbert: The 'Fox And Friends' Have Ebola! (VIDEO)

HE was already working in Liberia—for the last 3 years.

And NBC has evacuated him to the US for medical treatment at NBC’s expense.

Good, they should. I guess I’m saying that America might have a better grasp of world affairs if these chintzy corporations still maintained foreign bureaus with employees rather than in NBC’s case occasionally packing off a Manhattan media type to meet up with a pack of freelancers.

OK, what am I missing?

I know there is a lot of “freelancers” or “independent contractors” who are long term employees in every respect except being eligible for benefits, and yeah, it’s an issue I have pretty strong feelings about having been stuck in that situation myself in my younger years. But it doesn’t look like that’s what happened here, at least from what reporting on this is out there that I’ve seen. I haven’t seen anything about where his health insurance coverage is. (Given his rather unique family situation I’d say he’s likely well taken care of.)

But maybe I just misunderstood what point you were making.

And no, I don’t work for NBC, lol.

Coincidentally, for the first time in a while I had to watch a different ad, this one with Ron Reagan promoting “Freedom From Religion.org”.

Much more refreshing than Bud Light.

By “unique family situation” I’m guessing you mean that the infected freelancer’s father is a “physician in Rhode Island”?
I was talking about NBC’s responsibility not just for the crew but for sending marginally prepped people into the hot zone and people (the freelancers) not covered under the corporation’s health plan without regard to family member occupations. Sure under the glare of today’s attention NBC seems magnanimous but when the attention dies down will this corporation still provide the attention to a freelancer that a long term health plan would?

Where to start…

He’s basically a member of the first family of westernized Tibetan Buddhism. In fact he’s the eleventh reincarnation or whatever of some religious leader or other. His mom is the widow of the guru Chogyam Trungpa, whose followers included Allen Ginsberg, Joni Mitchell, and Pema Chodran - the Shambhala outfit out of Boulder Colorado. His biological dad is the physician, who married his mom sometime after Trungpa died.

So this guy has got family on three sides with ample financial resources, not to mention the love and support of god knows how many in the Shambhala community. He’s actually designated as the reincarnation of some Tibetan religious leader…

He’d been living in Liberia for two or three years working as a human rights activist. The cameraman gig was not his primary reason for being there, and he was probably as informed and as prepared as anyone could be for what he was facing.

I haven’t seen it reported anywhere that he is uninsured. Given his role in securing care for his profoundly disabled brother, I suspect he knows how to work the system, for better or worse.

OK If you say so, MattinPA.

I watched it (thanks for the encouragement—

my ad was RonReagan touting FreedomFromReligionFoundation…

Ah, where to start on this end? Another famous, entitled kid working for NBC…nuff said. I was merely working from ordinary news accounts. A curious attempt at concern trolling…
