Discussion: Cochran Joins Calls For New Mississippi Flag Amid Confederate Debate

Discussion for article #237825

Sooner or later idiots like Ted Cruz are going to realize hopping on the caboose of this train speeding away from Segregationville looks bad for them.

I have this feeling that Mississippi’s legislators have been told several times by CEOs that their companies are not going to be locating in the state because of it’s ‘heritage.’

The late Nina Simone who experienced no small measure of racism during her life wrote a song called Mississippi Goddam, an enraged cry over racial prejudice in the South, written in response the the murder of Medgar Evers and to the bombing of the church in Alabama. Simone was also close to Dr. King and to Malcolm X and in 1965 during the march to Selma she sang it. She left the US in 1974.

Alabama’s got me so upset, Tennessee’s made me lose my rest, and everybody knows about Mississippi goddam

You just know that Sen. Josh McDaniel’s reaction would have been “The South shall rise again!”

Geeez, I forgot about Wanna-Be Senator Locked in the Basement. No doubt he would be leading the charge to defend the Confederacy.

Why is Georgia getting a pass on its Confederate-based state flag?

Ask him for a statement, because I will buy you a beer.

oops, it’s Chris McDaniel (how could I forget him?)

from his facebook page…

To use scripture as a justification for changing a state’s flag is intellectually disingenuous.
If the state is to remove ANYTHING that is offensive to ANYONE, then NOTHING would be left. Including scripture.

oh, and there is more… Senator Chris McDaniel

All these Republicans joining the bandwagon, it’s starting to make me uncomfortable. I’m beginning to think the flag should stay so we can all make fun of those crackers and the fact that they lost.

Maybe it’s a new strategy to get the Black vote.

Things change. Slowly.

I worked as an assistant professor at Ole Miss from 95 to 02. In 96, the editors of the Daily Mississippian (an excellent student newspaper, published 5 days a week, with more news than the local Oxford Eagle newspaper) published an editorial asking students to stop flying the flag (that flag) at sporting events. About a week later, (in my memory) the football coach and the men’s basketball coach wrote a joint op-ed, asking for students to stop flying the flag at sporting events. Because it hurt recruiting. And it did. (One of the stars on the football team (pre Eli Manning era) was a student in my stats class, and he told me that the other SEC teams recruiting him kept pointing out that Ole Miss was the racisty-racist school in the SEC). Marinate on that, for a bit, but whatevs.

The SGA (student government association), about a week later after the coaches’ Op-Ed passed a mild resolution asking students to not fly the flag at sporting events.

About 48 hours later, the University announced that no sticks would be allowed at sporting events.*#

Some were very disappointed that the University did not take a more forthright stand against the flag.

I was not among them: the flag, for the most part, disappeared from sporting events. Small step. But welcome.

Change takes time.

*The chancellor received death threats for banning sticks during sporting events.

#Tough to fly a flag without a stick.
