My observation is that walking something back doesn’t work with Trump. When Trump feels as if someone has been “very unfair” to him, that’s that. Trump nurses even minor slights, regardless of subsequent apologies or “walkbacks”. Coats initial reactive statements will stick in Trump’s craw and he will nurse his sense that’s he’s been betrayed and must now hit back.

someone who still has some credibility left has to stand up and scream, “We have to stop Trump before he destroys the US and irreparably damages the free world!”
[/quote]I wonder how much of their reluctance to do so is not so much corruption as fear of getting squashed like a bug.

I think Coats is taking one for the team here —

He’s a smart guy and knows what it could be like if donnie gets a real bootlicker in there —

He’s doing what he must to stay …

sometimes ya have sacrifice a few pieces in the game
to get your opponent distracted —

OT, a bit, but guess what happened last night:

Quote from my new favorite web site’s (investigaterussia.com) article about the Times piece:

“But in February, Mr. Trump — over the objections of law enforcement professionals — took the unprecedented step of lowering the walls of secrecy around such materials to enable House Intelligence Committee Republicans, led by Representative Devin Nunes of California, to disclose their three-and-a-half-page memo, which sought to portray the surveillance of Mr. Page as scandalous.

In addition to invoking Mr. Trump’s declassification to seek disclosure of the underlying materials by filing a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the Justice Department, The Times also petitioned the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to unseal the materials itself. The court has not responded to that request.”

Trump really shot his tiny member off this time

That’s OK, Dan. We will disrespect Trump for you.

Yup. The documents show that Nunes is a fucking liar and Trumpozoan Toady. The WH apparently released this. They thought they had scored some sort of coup. But whenever they pull something like this it redounds back on them bigly. Not that their base will care. As long as they have some minute kernel of “truthiness” to hit back on twitter and “own the libs”, they are good to go.

ETA

And the FBI started to go after Page in 2013, long before the Trump candidacy.

Liars lie. There is no Truthiness left. This is REALLY damning

“Visible portions showed that the F.B.I. in stark terms had told the intelligence court that Mr. Page “has established relationships with Russian government officials, including Russian intelligence officers”; that the bureau believed “the Russian government’s efforts are being coordinated with Page and perhaps other individuals associated with” Mr. Trump’s campaign; and that Mr. Page “has been collaborating and conspiring with the Russian government.”

The application shows that the F.B.I. told the court it believed that the person who hired Mr. Steele was looking for dirt to discredit Mr. Trump. But it added that based on Mr. Steele’s previous reporting history with the F.B.I., in which he had “provided reliable information,” the bureau believed his information cited in the application “to be credible.”

The unredacted portions of the original application and the three renewal applications are otherwise largely identical, so it is not visible whether the F.B.I. told the court that it was gaining useful intelligence from the wiretap of Mr. Page as it asked for extensions. But the length of the applications grew significantly each time, indicating that new information was being added: They were 66 pages, 79 pages, 91 pages and 101 pages, respectively.

The materials also revealed which Federal District Court judges signed off on the wiretapping of Mr. Page: Judges Rosemary Collyer, Michael Mosman, Anne C. Conway and Raymond J. Dearie. All were appointed by Republican presidents.”

Remember that scene in Albert Camus’ Caligula (before Penthouse used it) where Caligula humiliates the Senators and one Senator with a beautiful wife in particular? If the WH announced the Russian Summit 2.0 out of spite while Coats was on live TV, we are now approaching Caligula territory with Donald The Vain and Treasonous.

Jesus H. Christ! Will you QUIT SNIVELING, COATS??!!
Remember the EIGHT years of random “leading from behind!” (whatever that means) attacks from GOPers against President Obama!?

Today’s Republicans are so terrified an asshole anarchist like Trump might badmouth them on Twitter! THIS is how Democracies DIE!

Coats: No ‘Disrespect’ Intended With My ‘Awkward’ Response To Trump’s Putin Invite

True. Disrespect is much milder than contempt.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats apologized Saturday […]

Actually, I saw no apology in his statement, Mr. Shuham (@mattshuham).

And even one of the sources you provided says this:

Without actually walking back his statements, Coats seemed to be seeking to mollify a president and a White House that can be extremely sensitive to perceived slights.

And, as a lovely bonus for the walkbacker, he sees that as a sign of weakness.

Actually, accurate. That’s something Trump himself could have said. Genius branding in Trump’s Fantasyville world. Coming from Coats, it now belongs to fake. Is that Trump’s problem?

Is Trump’s “rule” really when it comes to the media show, jealousy trumps loyalty?

Trump not only lies all the time, he fails to coordinate his organization. The problem is at the top.

Which tells us how seriously we should take Trump’s own “walkbacks,” rare as they may be.

You’re probably right, and I don’t necessarily consider Mattis or Coats corrupt. However, if their fear is of being personally humiliated or losing personal power, then they aren’t really putting country first or acting heroically as some claim.
