Discussion for article #237509
And now many Americans think that Ronald Reagan was a disaster as a President while the rest seem to think he’s a Saint.
1980 was not Reagan’s first run for the presidency. It was his third. He had two terms as governor of the most populous state in the union under his belt, during which he had won national acclaim for his DFH punching skills. He also had prior government experience as an FBI informant when he was president of the SAG.
Sshhhhhhh… just let them go ahead and believe that their cast of clowns are in fact serious contenders.
Mr Lewis may be as delusional as Trump.
I agree. Donald Trump is good for social, religious and fiscal conservatives alike. He is a great flag bearer for the Republican party. He will be as good for American democracy if not better than both Ronald Reagan and the severely conservative former vulture capitalist, tax cheat and pension thief Mitt Romney.
I still think Ronald Reagan is a joke.
Amurikkka’s infatuation with Reagan:
Answer: nothing yet.
St Ronnie of Raygun had handlers who didn’t let him say anything off-base. Drumpf is a loaded gun just ready to go off.
I say this with the utmost sincerity, if Donald effing Trump somehow finds his way to becoming POTUS, I am Canadian the very next day. This isn’t a joke, although it sounds like one. I will say aboot, and aye after every sentence! I already love poutine (sp?) (we call it disco fries here in Jersey.)!!! In fact, this goes for Ted Cruz, the Doctor idiot who said that Obamacare is the worst thing since slavery, Mike Huckabee, wow…pretty much every Republican. So basically, there is a little less than a %50 chance that I’m moving to Canada, based on recent polling. Ohhhhh Canadaaaa! Again, seriously, I’m not joking.
Can anyone imagine Trump during the upcoming debates? A mix of cringe-worthy moments mixed with belly laughs.
what’d ya know FOX finally got something correct…Ronald Reagan was a joke. A BAD ONE. I could NEXT figure out WHY he was the President and his wife, that was a nightmare, the REAGAN FAMILY were dysfunctional.
No, we see Trump as a joke because he is one. Reagan has no bearing or relevance to Trump’s joke-worthiness.
Regardless of anyone’s feelings on Reagan he did not go from being in movies to the presidency. He was a governor in there too. Trump has made quite a bit of money on exploiting various things but has also gone bankrupt.
“People said this B-movie actor Ronald Reagan, he was playing opposite a chimpanzee, he couldn’t possibly be a serious candidate for office." Louis said. "And he won the presidency – twice!”
Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump are not at all in the same league at this stage of the game. Trump may be a real estate “mogul,” but he has exactly zero experience governing in the realm of politics. Contrast that with Reagan having successfully running winning gubernatorial campaigns in California – and serving the whole time, unlike some who quit halfway through their first and only term. Like him or not, Ronald Reagan had a lot of relevant experience under his belt prior to his presidential bids. Again, Trump has none to speak of.
Seriously, it’s like the extent of his research was remembering that some people made fun of Reagan and inventing a feel-good story of him as an outsider overcoming the odds and achieving great things in his first foray into politics. As if he went straight from Hollywood to the Whitehouse, riding entirely on his high ideals and charisma. But as much as I could totally see that being the plot of a few classic Ronald Reagan movies, that’s obviously not what really happened.
It’s sad how people can say anything they want on TV and it’s considered impolite to correct them, no matter how crazy it is. I’m sure there are now CNN viewers who will undoubtedly repeat this talking point to someone when explaining why Trump stands a chance. After all, if the great Ronald Reagan can be retconned into a Trump-like story, surely Trump could turn himself into Reagan.
Stop using FACTS when talking about Saint Ronnie Raygun.
It makes his good friend Rambo-Jesus angry, and you don’t want to see him angry.
BTW - Don’t forget that not only did he have mad DFH-punching skills. He also signed into law the countries FIRST state-wide gun control laws to disarm the “NI(CLANG!)” and calm the blue-hairs terrified of the Black Panthers (with full-throated national editorial support from the NRA.)
I do remember some derision in the 70’s, but it was mostly of the “can you believe anyone that far to the right thinks he could possibly be president, ha ha ha!” variety. No one seriously believed he had any more chance than Goldwater did until he shanked Gerry Ford.
Reagan was a joke. Trump is a joke. The difference is that apparently, Reagan was an electable joke.
I’m old enough to remember the 70’s and it’s true. Sadly, the real Reagan wouldn’t be “conservative” enough with today’s Republicans.
Let’s admit it, today’s conservatives aren’t conservative, they’re reactionaries.
