Discussion: CNN: FBI Traced Suspected Russian 'Fake News' Push On Election Day

Some in the FBI saw it as a rousing success.

Wonder if Giuliani is doing some sweating these days.

I believe it likely. The evidence is there and the data management load would be well within their resources.

Must read from the “conservative” viewpoint at WaPo. Besides the excellent article, I am enthralled by the headline, and wonder, as many folks do, what is Kelley’s true plan? He obviously knows Trump, Bannon, Miller, Ivanka, Jared have been promoted well beyond their level of incompetence. Does he have delusions of grandeur or is merely trying to clean up the train wreck?

what is Kelley’s true plan?

That’s a really good question. My guess is he hopes to contain and isolate impacts from the craziness – just try to bring as much normalcy as he can. I expect him to last longer than most and to be more effective than most (while he lasts) simply because you don’t achieve his rank and CV without learning how to navigate political hazards while keeping your cool. He’s probably willing to cajole and humor for the sake of what he believes is “the greater good” but ultimately even just being successful will cause Trump to turn on him. That’s how I predict things will go: Kelly does well, receives recognition for that, Trump gets jealous and looks for opportunities to kneecap him.

It rings false for another reason. “Monitoring the news” involved reading social media posts that the poster wanted people to read. Either the quote distorted what the source meant, or the FBI’s activities were much different than described in the article.

In the CNN source article is this sentence:
For the FBI, this was uncomfortable territory, given the First Amendment’s free speech protections even for fake news stories.

That makes no sense when the activities described in the article were “monitoring” web posts. There is no censorship, penalty, restraint, or intimidation involved when you are just reading posts, assuming that the FBI didn’t friend or follow with an account identifying itself as law enforcement.

I’d bet that The Ghoul has been in contact with the so-called “man” in the WH and was under the distinct impression that he’d be assuming the role of AG in the very near future. Looks like that isn’t panning out as planned because 1) Sessions didn’t take the bait and quit, and now Kelly won’t let him get fired and 2) congress made it impossible to bypass senate confirmation with recess appt.

Oops.

@losamigos @socalista - it feels like Kelly’s there to ensure a smooth transition to Pence and to provide guardrails to prevent Tramp from doing something reckless (okay, more reckless) in the interim.

Well, Kelly was responsible for all of those questionable travel bans that came out of DHS early in the Trump administration. That alone makes me suspicious about his motives.

I admittedly didn’t read that article, but it seems to assume that Kelly’s job is to tell the truth to this President when it’s nothing of the sort. Kelly’s job is to advise the President and then wrangle political allies or opponents to do the President’s bidding. If Kelly thinks Trump’s goals can be obtained by lying to the President, to us or to Congress (to name a few), then that is what Kelly will do.

I noticed in the 6 O’clock hour on Faux the lead story was about…
Loretta Lynch and Hillary

I believe the 2016 election was rigged and its results are inherently illegitimate. Russian intelligence operatives and their white supremacist American collaborators rigged the vote and the outcome. I would not be surprised if vote tallies were altered in 39 or more states where Russian and Republican operatives hacked election systems and infiltrated human assets.

I know it’s probably asking a bit much but can’t they let her go for fuck’s sake? As they are fond of saying, she lost! They need to fucking move on like everyone else. But Hillary said ‘deplorables’ one time and that was really mean! Grow up you petulant little shits.

Morons and propagandists have polluted the conversation with their repetitious demagogic idiocy and everyone has to suffer for it. Fuck Fox News and the illiterate #MAGA dead-enders. I hope karma finds an appropriate fate for the assholes.

They have to point their fingers at someone, and she being the only viable target…

No.

Meanwhile, this kinda feels like their version of the final stage of grief.

If Trump was pulling the strings and telling the Russians what do, the effort would have failed – just like all of his efforts.

The KGB/FSB wouldn’t be dumb enough to take instructions from Trump. And, since Trump doesn’t really have any money, use of contractors is probably out.

Hillary calling them deplorables didn’t even begin to address how racist, hateful, bigoted, jealous these losers were, and for the wealthier among them (and that’s who voted for Trump in droves), how selfish and greedy and all those other “attributes.”

They voted for the absolutely worst candidate the republicans have ever nominated, knowing what an amoral, ignorant jerk he was and is.

No. Deplorable doesn’t even begin to describe them.

She’s still on the right, but she’s about as anti-Trump as you can get.

Painter has been on a roll. I’m liking him these days… never imagined.

They may have “won” the election. But now either deep down or shallow up, they know they are losing. They need to “win” again, so yeah, let’s talk about Hillary! Some people keep saying Hillary should move on. No, the ones that haven’t truly moved on are those Trumpkins. They never can when their “win” is forever illegitimate.

FOX is not even a mere right-wing media outlet anymore. They are effectively a state-owned propaganda machine. What I wish we would see, in addition to those morons going down, is their license revoked. For the sake of the country.

My theory has long been - once it became clear there were multiple connections to Russia during the campaign - is that it’s all about coordination. Russia and their operatives drove the misinformation / propoganda boat, while Trump’s team - and GOP too? - provided information. What I hope is at some point an unambiguous series of payments, lists of key precincts, or mention of talking points being peddled will turn up. To the end, a lowly IT person might prove the key.
