Not having been much of a fan of the Cliontons in the past…I have to say, I’m really starting to like this incarnation of HRC. I would have voted for her regardless if she were the nominee…but my enthusiasm is definitely rising.

How long before Fox blasts the news that Hillary hates the police? 3…2…1

Clinton did not specify races of the parties involved in her tweet, as your headline alludes. This was a despicable thing to do no matter what race was the cop and what race was the student. Sometimes people need to take a break from crying racism, lest it starts losing its impact on real racist incidents as in the story of the boy who cried wolf.

Wow. This South Carolina white “officer” already has some negative history.

Nevertheless, he overstepped and once again, caught because of a video.

TPM needs a good editor. Josh sure as hell isn’t one.

Once again, self-absorbed members of law enforcement demonstrate that if you do not comply with their every demand and address them with respect and deference, they feel well within their rights to assault you, arrest you, and perhaps even put a bullet in your brain.

I can’t see how there was any need to remove the student from the room in the first place. Not wanting to hand over phone, but not acting in any way that was dangerous, or even disruptive, to the other students? Sounds like a reason for a consequence of some kind, if it’s a continual problem then maybe detention, visit to the guidance counselor, contact parent, etc – but certainly not grounds to be removed from the classroom, disrupting learning time for both her and all the other students. And for fuck’s sake, flipping her desk over and tossing her on the floor and restraining her? She could have been seriously injured, not to mention definitely traumatized. Everyone responsible for this train-wreck should be held accountable, including and especially the cop, but also whatever administrator made the call to turn this into a use-of-force situation in the first place.

Ok. The headline is bad. But let’s not even start to pretend this isn’t about race. This video is part of a long line of videos of white police officers terrorizing black citizens. The wolf is in the room, and his name is Deputy Fields.

Yep. This is not the tepid, careful woman who voted for the Iraq war resolution and played it so safe in 2008. This is “all out of fucks to give” mode.

Wait You mean Deputy Fields has a history of doing this to white kids? If not, get real.

She’ll forget she said all this stuff once the primaries are over. She’ll be just as big of a flip flopper as Romney. That’s how she rolls.

Bernie 2016.

I agree the headline is used to sensationalize this tragic story. In this age of cellphones and social media, at least this incident was captured and perhaps there will be a serious evaluation of the boundries and expectation of a school resource officer.

Oh, no – there’s an excuse all right. “She didn’t comply with a lawful order, so I taught her a lesson – er, I mean, I subdued the subject.”

It’s the same old pathetic excuse that racist cops always use to defend their brutality.

You seem to have already determined this incident has no racial component. That’s a fascinating conclusion under the circumstances. My conclusion is that this is one of those real racist incidents you’re talking about.

Has there been a man-handlng of white students by police in school that would challenge that observation? Has there been an epidemic of arrests of white school children for behavioral issues that used to be handled in the school, greasing the skids for the school-to-prison pipeline? Is there any evidence whatsoever that this incident is not in fact yet another in a nationwide history of racist incidents perpetrated by police whether in a classroom setting or on the streets?

I’m not certain, but I know I haven’t heard of any of these things. But by all means, if you have evidence that this is nothing more than an equal-opportunity exercise of brutality, please share it. All I know is that the sheriff is already out there playing the media with the “he’s dating a black woman” excuse.

My bias is based on the evidence I’ve seen, and in my view, it’s sensible to assume the obvious until proven otherwise, not the other way around. But yeah, of course, maybe he isn’t a racist. Maybe he’d slam a tiny white girl who posed no physical threat to the floor too. But from Tamir Rice to the Texas pool party, it’s no wonder so many have concluded that cops are out of control with respect to racial bias, even with children.

At this point, it is unreasonable to expect the public to afford the benefit of the doubt to those whose consistent actions are the very genesis of that doubt.

South Carolina again.

Sorry, but headlines of this type are a feature not a bug. It’s part of the editor’s job description:

The editor must also have the range to handle both the public policy seriousness we’re known for with the over-the-top sometimes tabloidesque headlines and tone that is no less a part of who we are.

So what has Bernie said on this topic?

Sometimes, a lot of political good is done in real time by simply acknowledging a problem. It does carry a certain amount of risk.

Is Bernie going to stick by his position on guns?
