Discussion: Clinton Rips GOP On Voting Rights While Calling For Universal Voter Registration

Discussion for article #237153

A National ID card is what should be issued to everyone with a SS number, that takes care of any mythical voter problems the republicans claim their ID laws do. But oddly enough, they HATE the idea of a National ID card…weird.

“What part of the democracy do [Republicans] not understand?”

The part where people get to vote.

Yep. The ‘theorist’ so admired by Jeb Bush, is Charles Murray, author of the Bell Curve who also firmly believes that only the elites should rule. He is against democracy straight out.

“Voting should not be a partisan issue and there are some good voting reforms that have been endorsed by members of both parties,” said Jonathan Brater

No, there hasn’t been good reforms from both sides. One side is actively working on creating obstacles to voting, the other isn’t. Stop playing this fucking false equivalency game.

LOL!!! Now THAT is what I like to see! She just flung turds in their eyes and lit them on fire at the same time. DRIVE THE TEATROLLS CRAZY. ROPE! NO QUARTER!

I think it’s actually two things:

  1. The part where EVERYONE gets to vote (FIFY) and
  2. The part where voting can result in them losing and not getting to have their way.

As part of this discussion, here are some questions that should be asked of every Republican politician and conservative pundit: In the past 50 years, how many times has a Democratic president, governor, senator, congressman, or state legislator proposed restricting voting rights for any citizen (even for those most likely to vote Republican)? Ask for specific examples. Then remind them of all the voting restrictions passed and proposed just in the past 10 years by Republicans (I know, it’s a long list). And ask them to explain how any of those will restrict the rights of citizens likely to vote Republican as opposed to those likely to vote Democrat.

The words mean nothing, because the results of the words will be nothing.
You see, Congress proposes legislation, and passes laws. It says so on that poor tattered little scrap of parchment that was once the basis for American Liberty.

Congress will not propose, or pass any such laws.
End of story.
The governments of the “several states” (most controlled by The Grumpy Old Party, and wedded to outfits like ALEC) have even less intention to propose or enact such laws.
Double end of story.
It’s a nice “stump speech” for all it is worth.
Which is not much.
Unless the American Sheeple get up off their wooly backsides, and hand HRH Clinton II a new House and Senate Majority along with the keys to the White House.
Which the American Sheeple have no intention whatsoever of doing. Anymore than the GOP does of passing new voting rights legislation in any Statehouse which they (unfortunately) control.
The same can be said for amending the tattered scrap of parchment. It ain’t gonna happen. Sorry.
Triple end of story.
Next campaign speech, please.

All these bozos who have drunk the Clinton Brand Kool-Aid seem to have forgotten that it takes two (2) branches of Government to legislate in the good old USA.
But, being mostly sheep, they will (regrettably) go ahead and vote for a new Queen, and forget the fact that the “Queen” can’t do beans without a new “Parliament.”

"You don’t get cooperation on this issues by saying to Republicans, ‘What part of the democracy do you not understand?’”

You don’t get cooperation from Republican politicians on this anyway. So stop trying to play nice with people who clearly have no interest in it. Call them out and vote them out.

It’s called a Passport. I will agree with you ONLY in so far as every one with a Social Security number ought to be given one (1) FREE OF Charge or proctology examination.
THAT would solve a myriad of Problems. Most of them have to do with Freedom of travel.
Of course it would also cost the US Government a ton of (Your) tax money. And we certainly cannot have that, now can we?

Of course, then we have the charming spectacle of someone walking up to you, or sitting behind a desk saying:
“Papers, Please!” Only there is nothing “pleasant” about the people doing the asking.
I’ve lived long enough to hear “Papers, Please.” in two languages.
German and Russian.
Used by some “Pleasant” people. Let me spell it out for you. GESTAPO and KGB.
I hope never to hear “Papers, Please.” in English, except maybe at a nice Newsstand.
I was sure once upon a time that I would never hear it used otherwise.
Every time someone says “National ID” I am no longer so sure.
Because everyone who says “National ID” has the best intentions.
And all of them forget what paves the road to hell.

I am in total agreement with you Hillary!

We should have already done that by now. and I’ve been wondering, what in the hell is wrong with us?

Listen asshole, there are plenty of us here who are far more aware than you’ll ever be of the dynamics of American politics, and we’re very well versed in how the sausage gets made. We understand that changing the direction of the country has to begin with politicians and other individuals taking a stand, and that staking out a position is merely the first necessary step. Reversing the gains the GOP has made will take a great deal of time and effort, and those of us who don’t have our heads up our asses understand that HRC doesn’t have a magic wand to wave any more than we thought Obama did.

If you want to crawl into your hidey hole and pull the covers over your head, go for it.

A bit harsh, but I do believe anything Clinton supports, such as voting rights, would already have been changed by President Obama, had Obama had solo ability. Ditto shutting down Guantanamo, immigration reform, women’s rights, and so on. It’s good to remember just how much a president is capable of doing on their own. All 2016 Dem candidates will promise the same or similar agenda; it is never a simple matter of ensuring a promise is fulfilled, but rather continued politicking in various forms after election. Little worse than a promise made, then dropping the fight once elected.

This is an issue that has legs as well as being very positive. Hillary needs to advocate as many positive, patriotic things as she can. It puts the Republicans on the defensive and on the negative side of every argument they make.

Never thought I’d see the day when any presidential candidate (Huckabee) would defend a child molester, but that’s where the GOP has gone with social conservatives as their primary base.

Republicans have screwed themselves with the Dreamers, pushed outsourcing, tried to ban birth control, caused universal underemployment, irresponsibly deregulated the banks and are constant warmongering. Not one positive proposal…ever. They can’t because Ayn Rand, the KKK and the Christian Wrong are not positive.

All Republicans want to do is help billionaires and tax shelter their wealth while they lower the standard of living of American workers. Even the TeaParty knows it.

These speeches are more about getting these ideas out there and to get people thinking. There are no reasons why this specific proposal can’t be implemented in blue states much like Republicans are running rampant passing their own draconian laws in the states they control. Our ideas are better and help more people. We can prove it by getting them passed in blue states.

You mean the part where DEMOCRATS get to vote.
