Discussion: Clinton On Baton Rouge Shooting: Those Who Shoot Police 'Take Aim At All Of Us'

Good luck, Hillary. President Obama and AG Lynch aren’t going to make this easy for you. After an initial comment of a conciliatory tone yesterday, the President then ended up doubling down on his usual anti- police rhetoric later on. AG Lynch, the top law enforcement officer in the country has had very little to say about the murders of cops in BR, the shooting of the Milwaukee cop in his car yesterday or the burning of a police car last night. It is expected that she will come out and tell BLM protesters “don’t be discouraged”, like she did after cops were slaughtered in Dallas.

You’re a funny guy, you go on before or after Dennis Miller in Cleveland?

I am in no way in favor of violence against the police, but as someone who was once handcuffed with two sets of handcuffs with my arms spread eagled and a cop slapping a piece of PVC in his hand telling me how he knows how to beat me without leaving any marks–inside the DeRidder, Louisiana police station–I have to say that allowing the police to behave like this “takes aim at all of us” and if “sit down, shut up and let the police beat and kill you” is the only response the government has then I am not going to be surprised if violence against police continues.

I am lucky to have been a white man in that situation; had I been black I would probably be dead.

"When the 24 hour news cycle moves on, I won’t,” Clinton promised.

Excellent.

the President then ended up doubling down on his usual anti- police rhetoric

@algonquinmatt forgot to site actual words that Obama used to in conveying his “anti-police rhetoric.” So here are just a few of the hateful things your president actually said about Dallas and Baton Rouge:

“There is no possible justification for these kinds of attacks or any violence against law enforcement. Anyone involved in the senseless murders will be held fully accountable. Justice will be done.”

“The entire city of Dallas feels this to its core. We are grieving with them. I ask you say a prayer for the officers and their families. Keep them in your thoughts.”

“We as a nation have to be loud and clear that nothing justifies violence against law enforcement. Attacks on police are an attack on all of us, and the rule of law that makes society possible.”

“The death of these three police officers underscore the danger that police across the country confront every single day,”

“I’ve spent a lot of time with law enforcement this past week. I’m surrounded by the best of the best every single day. And I know whenever this happens, wherever this happens, you feel it. Your families feel it. But what I want you to know today is the respect and the gratitude of the American people for everything that you do for us.”

OK. OK. I know that doesn’t sound like “anti-police rhetoric.” But, hey, why let the president’s actual words substitute for how Fox & Friends told you to characterize him?

Well, that’s something typical coming from "Joined ## minutes ago"ers. Sad!

You call this trolling?
I could train a seal to troll better than this.

Back in my day, we had real trolls, not his amateur stuff.
Trolling nowadays? Meh. They just phone it in.

Can’t TPM afford better trolls than this?

Today is Law-and-Order day at the GOP convention. What’s the over/under on how many times tonight Hillary will be misquoted as coddling criminals and hating police?

I agree that this is “excellent” point for her to make. It gets at a key part of case she needs to make to voters.

Hillary does best in my opinion when she underscores her substance and competence, and part of that substance involves doing hard work that’s not necessarily flashy. It’s a great contrast with Trump.

She hasn’t done enough to make the case for why she’ll be an excellent president. Even Republicans lauded her substantive work as senator and secretary of state when she was in office. Ordinary voters have forgotten how popular she was as senator and secretary of state because she’s allowed the GOP to redefine her, with Benghazi and email – building the case that she’s not trustworthy. Her only answer to the email controversy has been essentially: they’re picking on me, I’m sorry (sort of), and Trump’s worse. I hope she’ll begin to positively re-introduce herself to the public and remind them why was so popular back in, say, 2012.

And I hope she’ll start doing it soon. Attacking Trump and checking off a bunch of poll-tested policy positions popular with her base will not be enough. Even if she wins on that kind of slog, it won’t generate coattails and it won’t give her any kind of mandate.

She’s knowledgeable, well-read on all issues, and experienced. She knows nuances and details that most people don’t even know exist. While that doesn’t guarantee greatness in a President, it’s a helluva starting point.

He played a chair at the 2012 convention. Has only lost a little of his edge since then.

This is what terrifies me. I used to think it was an anomaly, but over the last several years, it has become the norm. This guy probably honestly believes that President Obama a) said something anti-police and then b) doubled down on it. If we could stand next to the guy at a computer, I’m certain he would not, could not, as AotU points out, actually find this rhetoric (because it does not exist). But he believes it to be true.

I do not know how this country moves forward when a third of it willfully believes easily disproven nonsense. Even if Trump loses, the stupid have been empowered.

Sorry… just feeling a bit sad for our future, right now.

Well Trump says that no he never said it outright–but you can tell by his BODY LANGUAGE!

I wonder how TPM was even able to obtain a transcript of Hillary’s remarks, given the virtual news blackout she is being forced to campaign under.

I am also wondering if, when she announces her VP selection, the networks will even cover that, given how important it is to transcribe and repeat ad nauseum 24/7 every breath, comment and fart (but I repeat myself) Trump gives forth.

I dream of a Bartlet-Ritchie type debate moment where Clinton is able to illustrate the difference between knowing things and not knowing things.
