Hillary’s firewall of 273 electoral votes looks pretty solid. I agree with Josh’s comments on the election. Trump is fighting for tossups states that could make this election very close. But Trump so far cannot flip that one very blue polled state to flip to actually win.
BOTTOM LINE is turnout. If Democrats vote like they did in just 2012, Hillary wins. If Hillary loses it’s Democrats across the nation own fought for not turning out. The idea that Trump could be President should scare every registered Democrat voter out to vote for Hillary.
I am now cautiously optimistic as Trump has to win every single tossup state and flip a blue blue state. Hillary wins either Nevada, Florida or North Carolina (3 states she is polling with small small leads) she wins. Trump needs all 3 plus flipping that obscure Blue State.

Another way that same headline could be written, of course, it harkens back to a time before people clicked on headlines.
“Hillary Clinton Still Leads a Tighter Race, Times/CBS News Poll Shows” is the title of the NYT article you reference. To me, that is a very different emphasis than:
" Trump Closes In On Clinton In CBS-New York Times Poll".
The TPM article is fine, but this is a really bad time for TPM to revert to the click-baiting, tabloidish headline writing that it has employed through much of this past year.
This is when every vote counts. if you haven’t voted, vote. If you have voted, find friends and family who haven’t. If you need to, take off work to drive them to the polls. This is especially true if you are in North Carolina or Florida. Don’t forget Hillary needs help in Congress. Without it we are going to get four years of pure bullshit. Get out to vote for Democratic senate and house candidates.
So, at the end of the day, Republicans are voting for the Republican nominee and Democrats for theirs. It’s just a question of turnout. The debates, the scrutiny, the asymmetrical merits of the candidates have had very little impact except as a prolonged and painful entertainment. Democracy in the USA truly has been hollowed out.
Obviously, Comey’s “announcement” hurt Clinton in the short-run. I am hoping that that’s over and that momentum begins to move in her direction. Where I am, we get the ads directed at New Hampshire. In the last couple of days, Hillary has ramped up the adds with Trump speaking for himself, and showing what a disaster he’d be.
She shelved the positive ads. She needs them now. She is going to need good will after November 9.
Or you could look at the two polls before the mid-October predator-bump: 10/4 H +4; Sept tied. Looking at that, headline could be “Race Settles Back into Narrow Clinton Lead”.
Hate to say it, but negative ads work. Especially with Trump. He is the scariest candidate in history. Fear does motivate.

Troll? This whole campaign has been dominated by negative ads and comments. People have no idea who Hillary is. All they know about her comes through the Trump filter.
She had planned to pivot to positive ads at the end of the campaign, I know, I have seen several of them. She replaced those ads with another round of negative ads.
Take the email “scandal,” total bullshit from day one. The Comey surprise just conflates the email server bullshit with Abiden/Weiner sloppiness.
I don’t know about you, but I am tired of meaningless investigations.
The big question in my mind is will America survive cable news, reality TV and talk radio.
Briefly, I would say that poor education is more to blame than media outlets. The Republican educational strategy has been a shameless one of keeping citizens stupid, and ready to serve in the military.
Yes, this should scare the bejeezus out of every sane person and I hope it does. But I do want to point out this poll was conducted right at the height of the firestorm after Comey’s bombshell, when the con rumor mill was cranked up to 11 with the media chasing after them.
That Hillary maintained a 3-pt lead even before actual facts began to emerge is a good thing.
