Discussion: Clinton Goes After Alabama GOPers For ‘Discriminatory’ DMV Closures

WHOS, what has Obama said? I’d think that this would offend the President a lot and in more ways than one.

This is so transparent and blatant that I don’t know how they get away with it. Aren’t there agencies to make sure that these types of things don’t happen or are fixed if they do. The FEC is about campaign finance so I’m thinking that this is a Justice Department issue.

I understand the regular white bread schmoes of Alabama being racist bastards and living in the past, but the GD Governor and congress has to be somewhat worried about the state’s image and about progressing even if the word progressive appalls them.

That’s right Hillary, call out those redneck monsters…reveal their rebel asses to the world! They need a bright light to shine on them to reveal their wickedness and to remind them that we, the people are fully aware of their wicked and harmful deeds towards us all! And more importantly, we will not tolerate their stupid nonsense!

my retired parents do not have to file at all, so long as their income is below a certain threshold. I found this hard to believe but it’s straight from their tax accountant.

“The Republican-led legislature denied that the closures disenfranchised black voters and said they were made strictly because of budget cuts.”

of course. And poll taxes were never levied with the intent of preventing blacks from voting but instead to cover the costs to taxpayers of holding an election, and civics tests as a requirement for voting were always only intended to ensure an educated electorate.

Jim Crow laws have ALWAYS had a thin veneer of legality or good intent to them.

The thing is, in Alabama, they will win even if they didn’t resort to voter ID laws. That’s what makes this particularly maddening and anger inducing. Its literally kicking people when they are down.

…and raising taxes is out of the question for budget shortfalls , Bama???

no, kicking people while they are down is literally kicking people while they are down. FFS stop using “literally” as a modifier or for emphasis, unless you truly mean “literally”. There are plenty of perfectly suitable words that one can use instead of misusing ‘literally’.

Just do what other states are doing and automatically register everyone is eligible to vote when they turn 18. If you move to a state and change residence, automatically register them and invalidate the previous residences voter registration.

We should be doing everything we can to make it easier for people to vote. Its America, for goodness sake…voting is the ONE thing we should want to be exceptional about!

Not sure about the national holiday part, since national elections only happen once every 2 years, and it would tend to de-emphasize state and local elections that don’t fall on that day more than they even are. But I am totally down with automatic voter registration when someone turns 18.

As for this particular event, while I love that she went to Alabama to address this, I would REALLY love for her to leave behind some organization for little over a year to do massive voter registration drives. Drop some of her personal cash into the ACLU box and help fund the legal action against Alabama that is forthcoming.

Sure, she won’t win, but it will scare the crap out of a whole lot of republicans down ticket, and I suspect it would drive Black voter participation rates to record highs in Alabama.

Me too Plucky. I am delighted to see her go there.

The irony of course, is that there is only a statistically insignificant amount of illegal voting. Almost every instance turns out to be a case where there is a dropped letter from the name or an old address leading to a double registration. Errors are nearly always committed by the government, rather than by the voter. It takes too much effort to double vote, and it would require a massive secretive effort to do enough of it to matter.

If the TGOP really wants to guarantee the integrity of elections, they should be advocating for a paper trail for all computerized voting, as well as a truly independent review of closely contested elections.

Don’t hold your breath.

I like your idea of requiring an ID for a general government task/service that is also acceptable everywhere for voting. To achieve universal and continuous voter registration (including that precious photo ID card) for all citizens means that ID card must be necessary for a variety of services/tasks important to its holder, or the ID will be “misplaced” or never sought in the first place.

For example, using selective service registration (“the draft”), now mandatory for all 18 year-old men (soon women too, perhaps) to also register the applicants to vote, and issuing a laminated federal photo ID at the same time would effectively register most potential voters from then on. Someone earlyer noted that proof of selective service registration was necessary to obtain student financial benefits - so much the better!

To catch those citizens who fail to be registered to vote by selective service registration, require the same federal photo ID to sign up for federal/state assistance and unemployment benefits, Social Security, et al. If the applicant doesn’t have one, issue them one at that time and also register them to vote. Make federal photo IDs gettable at college registrar offices, and register the applicant to vote at the same time. Require that college students students show their federal ID when they pay their fees at the bursar’s office. Continue to make voter registration available at state DMV offices, town/city/county clerks and registrars offices, and issue the universal federal photo ID at the same time.

Bernie’s been too busy covering Hillary’s ass on her emails to get to everything else! On the other hand, maybe Hillary can get DWS and her DNC to give Alabama Democrats some tangible and timely help to register new voters.

If each such ID had a discrete number, it would also cut down on on-line 1040 identity theft.
