Yes, agreed. I, for one, don’t take anything for granted. Many of us initially didn’t take the guy’s candidacy seriously, and yet here we are, he is now officially the presidential nominee of a major political party. While being fully aware of different dynamics between the primaries and the general, I have this understanding Hillary does have vulnerabilities as a campaigner (no matter how outrageous, infuriating and unfair it is). So, no complacency here – we must work, and work hard, to make sure she’ll be the next president.
No, I don’t think so.
They did ask him about what is going on in Turkey and in general what the US response should be to authoritarian regimes that are destroying western style freedoms and institutions in their countries…
He basically said we should leave them alone to do their own thing, because cops got killed here. Which, on the face, seems like a really bizarre statement…a cause and effect that don’t exist if you will.
What I really think he was saying is that we need to adopt a more authoritarian style here in the US because cops were shot. Its not spread democratic ideals to dictatorships, its take dictatorship ideals to America.
They had how many GOP debates? Some of them covered foreign policy. How is it that the depth of his craziness never came out before?
As an aside, I don’t think I’ve even seen someone from the Trump camp pretend that their candidate is boning up on foreign affairs—something which would usually be considered the number 1 priority for an inexperienced candidate such as Trump.
Simple. Because those were GOP primary debates. Limited (and most zealous) audience who are proudly ignorant, along with limited attention from average voters. The MSM’s coverage of those debate as if they were reality TVs where hyperbole is virtue didn’t help either.
He largely danced around most of those issues, and sat back and let the others bloody each other instead. The few times he did step in, he didn’t do well…remember him not knowing, or even understanding after it was explained to him several times…what the nuclear triad is. Or he will speak on such huge generalizations that there was nothing to pin down.
Also remember, his opponents were a bad suited to pursue him on any of this. Bush tried to attack him for saying his advisers were the talk shows, but JEB being JEB it was like watching JEB brandish a feather in a knife fight.
And, generally speaking, the republican debates were fact free zones. None of the candidates wanted to use them and the moderators were by and large perfectly fine with that. Foreign policy discussions boiled down to…“How many Muslims are you gonna kill?” and “How horrible is Hillary on a scale of infinity to infinity squared?”
Have to agree with @mattinpa on why Clinton and her campaign staff must go big and wordy instead of doing what minimal donald does which is to say to all the important world issues he’s been questioned on that he and his people are looking into them. He understands nothing and knows nothing and listens to Sunday morning new shows to get his foreign policy education and so is incapable of reason, detailed though and policy planning. Clinton and her team have this capability in spades.
Weak. Much too weak. What the guy should have said is, “Donald Trump is a freakin’ lunatic, and if he’s President he’ll get us all killed!”
I realize that that may be an understatement, but kids may be reading this.
The guy who is sued and settles for ten cents on the dollar. The guy who reneges on his contracts, claiming the work isn’t done right. He has the nerve to talk about nations not paying. He will destroy the world’s economy.
That is not a reply which will change anything for anybody,
Donald Trump supporters are obviously not ‘thinkers’, but ‘feelers’.
The only correct way to communicate with them, would be “Trumps comments shows he doesn’t know the difference between his ass and his head”
Agreed. From a pure political point of view, this opens up a huge door for her with many republicans and republican leaning independents. He is not just disavowing standard republican international orthodoxy, he is dropping something completely new on the national stage…something that is rejected by large numbers of people on both sides of the aisle. And it plays directly into Hillary’s strong point.
Even more importantly, from a security/global stability stand point, these notions cannot be tolerated and must be vigorously and immediately rejected.
What Trump is doing is promising to violate multiple treaties with multiple nations.
Since the US Constitution makes it clear that all ratified treaties are the supreme law of the land, Trump is advocating that the US break its own laws and abandon the US Constitution.
Trump is showing us who he is—and as Maya Angelou reminded us, when people show us who they really are, we should believe them.
I wonder if we will see speakers from the GOP FP orthodoxy at the convention (Scowcroft is too old to take the podium? He would make a strong case for her with old-fashioned Republicans).
No, they are done with the foreign policy guys, and most of the big neocons have been publicly rejecting Trump for months. Several have even come out and said they will be voting for Hillary.
Hahahaha! Seldom seen? Or never-before seen?
OK, you guys should read the full transcript if you haven’t yet. I just now finished. It’s goddamn fucking full of amazingballs.
And Chuck and Andrea are there to give balance and make sure that people see the homespun Murrican wisdom of BillyBob and Brandeen.
And to remind viewers that there are troubling items about Benghazi and emails. Oh…and Hillary’s negatives.
The voters who supported Sanders may not hold beliefs terribly different
form those expressed by Trump— hell, who knows if Sanders’ views on
foreign policy are much different than Trump’s.
You’re welcome!
The feelings of his voters cause me far more alarm than Trump. Trump has possessed capabilities few men in history have had. He has had the capability of being an INSANE man protected by social structure. In days of yore, these would be people like monarchs.
Here, we have a capitalist–aware of his mental illness–concocting the maze of the Trump/Thug empire we see spread before us. In itself, that would be of little importance.
But the racial history of the U.S, the sabotage of the GOP decades ago, the destruction of Congress by Gingrich, the destruction of journalism by MSM “profit-whores” and FOX, the Hate of Talk Radio have created marks for Trump’s talents…in PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION!
These are the easiest marks Trump ever had. They have always been among us. But even that would have amounted to nothing without people like Les Moonves of CBS News giving Trump the mouthpiece and exposure HE NEEDED TO RUN THE CON.
I meant the Democratic convention. I don’t believe the campaign made speech offers to those neocons (their supports are more reluctant ones anyway, plus they are “toxic”), but I wondered about people like Scowcroft – his endorsement statement was a ringing and strong one with more credibility.
Not a chance. Hillary is not about to put a right wing hawk up on the stage at her convention.
