Oy yoy yoy. This stuff is really getting ridiculous. TPM and the rest of the media looking for any little thing to make an issue out of something
That was a pretty tone-deaf answer by Bernie, and a pretty clever response by Hillary.
Bernie âOne-Issue-Candidateâ Sanders kinda walked into that one.
âAbortion? Yeah, whatever. Can we actually, can we talk about things that really matter? Like Wall Street and Revolution?â
âAny stupid, absurd remark made by Donald Trump becomes the story of the week,â Sanders said. âMaybe, just maybe, we might want to have a serious discussion about the serious issues facing America.â
At first, I thought Clinton, PP, NARAL were making much ado about nothing, i.e., he meant we need to get away from the âTrump idiocy of the dayâ and discuss serious issues other than Heidi Cruzâs appearance and Trumpâs size relative to his hands, but in re-reading Sanders statement, boy, did he blow the abortion issue here!
Safe and constitutionally protected Choice is a big issue among Dems and some Repubs alike. Of course it is a âserious issue facing America.â
Well, as one of the Bernie posters here told me regarding BLM and Immigration reform, repeatedlyâŚthis is just Hillary pandering to women, instead of addressing the issues that are important to everyone.
Letâs just echo whatever twisted memes the Clinton campaign is putting out. That counts for coverage!
Seriously: Trump says outrageous thing. Whole world focuses on Trump. Trump gains more fans and voters for being politically incorrect. As Bill says, if you wrestle with the pig, the pig enjoys it.
Look: We need to use the neurological brain scans which can tell conservative minds from human ones, and force abortions on all pregnant conservatives who will not accept sterilization. Okay, thatâs outrageous. So vote for me!
Hillary is right, and it does reveal that part of his appeal is to the âbrosâ who donât care for or worry about the status of women, considering their issues to be âdistractions.â Shame on him. Iâm sure now heâll come out, as he did with BLM with some women supporting him to showcase. But heâs showing himself less than skillful as a politician to say the least.
Everything that Trump has said is awful, and because of its horrific qualities, it gets publicized. But since Trump has made clear his hatred of immigrants, women, blacks, the rest of the world, and his disdain for getting nukes under control â I would like to know if Bernie has addressed any one of Trumpâs pronouncements directly and attacked them?
I think he must truly believe that he can get white working class voters for Trump onto his side, so doesnât want to criticize Trump too much.
To which Bernie repliesâŚâIts a minor issue, we need to stay focused on the only important issues of the campaignâŚthe only ones i specifically talk about. Nothing else mattersâ
Thatâs kind of the point here. Bernie threw the entire issue of abortion rights under the bus with his comments. Basically because its difficult to that back to how corrupt Wall Street is.
Hogwash. He has a 100% record in support of abortion rights. Only moral idiots are against abortion rights (Iâm looking at you, pope), and having endless arguments with such idiots for decades now has done nothing to better secure those rights. The more we get bound up in their crazy arguments, the more abortion rights slip away state-by-state.
Also, many of the prominent pro-slavers (cough, pro-lifers) are women. Itâs not a âwomenâs issue.â Nor do most men want every woman they have sex with to bear a child!
Folks need to read up on their Lakoff. This is in âDonât Think of an Elephantâ territory. Sometimes it really is better not to reinforce a frame like âpro-life,â even by arguing against it.
I was watching MSNBC this afternoon and they interviewed a White guy (Iâd say working class) in WI to find out what he was thinking regarding the primary. He said that he was either voting for Sanders or Trump because they were both speaking to issues he cared about. He also said that everyone he knew was doing the same.
Methinks that it is high time that Senator Sanders felt real consequences for his statements and actions. He has had a very soft ride so far. The Republicans are laying off for obvious reasons. Secretary Clinton has not attacked him in a very strong way, certainly not as strongly as he has attacked her. She does not want to offend his supporters. So, on both sides Senator Sanders is having a fairly easy time of it. Time for consequences.
No one said he wasnât pro choice; it is obvious that he is pro choice.
What some people are pointing out is that his NUMBER ONE PRIMARY CONCERN is Wall Street, âbankstersâ, etc. His usual harangue. Pro Choice is somewhere down the list for him.
Not the point, Skippy.
Bernie said that Trumpâs comments were unacceptable, and then dismissed the issue and pivoted back to his standard stump speech.
Whether by intent or not, Bernie left the distinct impression that the abortion issue was not important to him in the election.
The only other mistake heâs made that was as bad was the âWeâll seeâ remark later in the interview.
This was far from Bernieâs best night.
It used to be Rudy âa noun, a verb & 9/11â Guilliani⌠now itâs Bernie âincome inequality is the only issueâ Sanders.
I am not sure making this about Bernie helps women or the HRC campaign. HRC just needs to keeps hammering on about the issue herself. Today, there were two articles about womenâs reproductive rights that I think illustrate how the issue goes beyond legislating morality into the realm of pure misogynistc cruelty:
Sanders supporters at the Washington state caucus seemed to think this was a good thing. I think getting some republican crossovers is good for either candidate â but which ones each may get is kind of interestingâŚ
Another TPM sensational headline to nothing.
Or maybe, Sanders dismissive response to Trumpâs criminalizing abortion.
Seems like the Comments operation is snappinâ now. Thanks, TPM.
The headline is a bit clickbaity, and I hate the âbashingâ narrative, but in fact choice is probably my most important issue, because if women, who are half of the human race, canât control their own bodies, then no other freedom they have means anything. I like Bernie, but he plays a one string fiddle to Clintonâs orchestra.
