““I’m wondering, as a scholar, if pagan forms are returning to the church this day,” he said. “I think that if we have a pope who doesn’t view things in the orthodox manner, we’re going to be having forms returning to religion that are not orthodox.””

Your a marketing director, dude. Not a scholar.

I saw “climate change skeptics” in the headline, but “climate change denier” in the story. The latter is correct, at least as far as national leaders go. Republican politicians know that climate change is happening; they just pretend to believe that the science is unsettled because they benefit from believing so. They are cynics and opportunists.

Their followers and Fox News viewers are different. They’re largely just ignorant.

You can go back to that sour-puss Thomas Malthus for that matter. Indeed, the principle was routinely demonstrated at the San Diego Zoo’s “Mouse House” in which a couple pairs of breeding mice were allowed to procreate in the confines of a limited food source (a giant loaf of bread shaped like a Victorian mansion". When the house was devoured, the hundreds of mice were taken out and fed to the snakes and owls, and the poop was recycled. Culturally, this is quite interesting as small families have been the norm for a while in Europe, while having five or six kids is nothing special in Syria or Iraq. I don’t believe this lack of family planning is an Islamic thing per se, e.g. Tunisia’s birth rate is about identical to the US and several other advanced economies. Rather high birth rates and failed states tend to go together.

If the Pope can solidify the link between climate change and the burden it places on the poor, he’ll be accomplishing more than Sierra Club and the very bourgeois outlook of the enviro establishment ever has.

The Republicans have a coherent program: First, ban all forms of birth control including abortion to force the birth of large numbers of unwanted children. Second, speed up climate change to encourage the Earth to abort all human life from itself in a series of end-time weather events. This efficiently speeds first the production of souls, and then the harvesting of them. In their fantasy, making the Earth a hell is the highway to Heaven.

OK, simply to say you’re concerned about climate change is “pagan” and “nature worship,” it makes you “dangerous,” means you seek “medieval stasis,” it’s “insanity on steroids” and will lead to “black death.”

And these are the people who call progressives “shrill.”

The Pope is a liberal activist. Donald Trump is driving the Republican Party to suicide. Bernie Sanders is making a serious run for the Democratic nomination. Obama is kicking ass.

Yet here in Canada, our Conservative Prime Minister is whipping up xenophobes and racists, increasing the military budget, and running a constant campaign of disinformation… and leading in the latest polls. I miss our quiet sense of Canadian-brand superiority - and for once, I wish the US President was the Canadian Prime Minister.

How times can change, eh?

“If the Pope stuck to standard Christian theology, "
You know, the “Standard GOP Christian Theology” of; Give more money to the Rich.
White, 6’2”, Red-Headed, Rambo-Jesus himself says to do that, right there in the book of Saint Ronnie: “And thou shalt take all thy hard-earned money and giveth it to the Wealthy for they are Blessed, and you are not.” “Neither shall thou give money to the Poor for the are Welfare Queens with Anchor-Babies, and being “Darkies” they are Naughty in mine eyes and therefor they shall do all the menial jobs whilst thou watcheth thine Big Screen TV and drinketh thy divine Beer.”
See? The Pope is SO Leftist anyway, and he doesn’t speak AMERICAN and has a funny commie-latino accent, and he wears a DRESS! That PROVES he is wrong! USA! USA! USA!

The Republicans and buffoons like George Will have yet to look in the mirror and realize ignorance is bliss, while the educated and informed realize knowledge is power.

Human caused climate change is here, it’s real, and we better start to address how we are destroying the earth with our fossil fuel based economy and fast!

We better also acknowledge that the US, like the world, has an over population crisis and it’s time to formulate a plan for taking our population from ~320 Million back to a sustainable 180 to 200 million. Growth is suicide for the US, the planet, and the human race!

damn… that’s getting right up to the line. and here i thought susan sarandon’s comment was a bit of seriously unnecessary hyperbole…

Harper is "leading’ with somewhere between 31 and 33% of the vote. At some point, the Liberals and the NDP will have to do what’s good for the country and put aside their differences and make a coalition to stop him. Now might be a good time.

"“I’m wondering, as a scholar, if pagan forms are returning to the church this day,”

Oh, you’re wondering as a scholar, not as the marketing director of a far right think tank.

I’m wondering, as a scholar, if Republicans would felate a baboon for $50 of Koch brother’s money.

you know the republican party and conservatives have lost all their marbles when they start attacking the Pope…If their god came down from the heavens and repeated everything the pope said they would renounce religion and their god.

Jesus said that the meek shall inherit the earth. However, the earth will not be worth inheriting. The climate deniers are grounded with a completely materialistic view of the earth, as merely a resource for unlimited material goods and growth. A spiritual approach to the stewardship of the earth is very much within the realm of the Pope’s authority and mission. The Pope is trying to reverse the idea that the pursuit of material goods has priority over everything else, including quality of life and spirituality.

Ah yes. The “Patriot” Post. Where apparently science goes to die (along with rational thought). The cognitive dissonance there is astounding. “Why do libruls ignore these 2 charts which clearly show CO2 is actually connected to increased wages and higher life expectancy?” (Sadly, that’s not an exaggeration of their point). And yet, they completely ignore the mountains of data and analysis that points to man-made climate change. 3 scientists, 2 charts totally upends the 97% consensus. Right? Oh and for good measure, here’s some howlers from the first few comments: “libruls are liars and fearmongers” (hmm, project much?); “Why won’t anyone acknowledge Obama said he was a Muslim?!” (which has f*** all to do with climate change).
I seriously think I found where Eustace gets his material from.

Agreed. Its not like the old days, when the NDP were a legit socialist party - they’re BOTH center-left now! Continued resistance towards the coalition idea is hurting my insides.

I wonder if part of Assad’s motivation is to push as many people out of the country as possible. The same people who deny climate change are also comprised of people who will not be willing to take on a significant number of refugees.
