People buy high-priced MLB gear to show their support for the team - and often choose gear that looks like what their favorite players use. By removing Chief Wahoo from team uniforms, in a few years Chief Wahoo will be all but forgotten by fans, and much easier to retire permanently.
By taking this approach, the Indians have avoided providing an incentive for people that like the logo to fight back and create a public spectacle.
