GOP candidates respond…
I’ll listen to and trust the advice of the senior military and professionals… unless and except when it conflicts with my visceral need to exact punishment on people I don’t like because it makes me feel good…
id will override ego and super-ego…
He won’t agree to CIA officers carrying it out again. What about private contractors?
I have to give Brennan credit for publicly repudiating the use of torture. Whether or not he is held to this promise is another matter, entirely, but my crystal ball is not functioning at the moment. Are we now so cynical that we assume a government official is lying?? And, thanks, “W,” for invading Iraq; I"m sure our armed forces are enjoying the “candy and flowers” being tossed at them. Oh, wait, that was the real President, Richard Bruce Cheney, unindicted war criminal.
And if a Republican is elected president, John Brennan would not remain as CIA Director. That job would probably go to John Bolton, Frank Gaffney, or maybe Ted Cruz’s father.
Beat me to it!
Doesn’t matter.
It’s the duty of everyone in military service to disobey an immoral order.
So far,the military and CIA have said no to torture. Unfortunately, our history shows that contractors (mercenaries) don’t have those ethics. Even worse, some of our politicians don’t have the ethics, morals, decency or understanding to accept that torture doesn’t work and shouldn’t be used.
Hope Brennan doesn’t like paddling sports. The percentage of former CIA directors who have met death while very much alone, out on the mighty Potomac and canoeing, is statistically highly unlikely.
I wish it was a joke.
Why do public officials have so much trouble making simple, declarative statements? He wouldn’t condone waterboarding because “this institution needs to endure?” WTF is that supposed to mean?
How about: “I wouldn’t permit waterboarding and other forms of torture because they’re war crimes, and they don’t work, anyway.”
The CIA won’t torture. Mexico won’t pay for a wall. South Korea and Japan don’t want nukes. Members of NATO don’t want it dismantled. Pro-life advocates don’t want women undergoing an abortion punished. A majority of Americans polled don’t feel banning Muslims from entering the U.S. accomplishes anything, and likely contributes to bad relations. Few if any economists think slapping a 35% tariff on foreign imports to the U.S. is smart.
Trump has damned few concrete policy suggestions, and the few he makes public no one judges especially intelligent, effective or practical.
they have trouble because they want to leave themselves weasel room… you know… taken out of context or misspoke…
So Brennan won’t waterboard? How about using enhanced aquatic techniques? All he needs is a willing lawyer with relaxed ethics to write an opinion that changes the meaning of the words to suit him, and he’s good to go.
Hey, it worked before.
… except for that surprisingly repetitious 26% of the population, the ones who think that Saddam Hussein had WMD (and that we found them), who think that Dick Cheney is usually “right on the money,” who think that Obama is a crypto-Muslim, and so on.
`Ha…good for him. I’d like to see one of the Teatroll asshats throw themselves on the rocks by attempting to prosecute someone for refusing that order.
This was published yesterday and it’s the Boston Globe front page dated April 9, 2017, which is reporting on the imagined horrors of a trump presidency. You must see it. There is one (fake) article whose headline is US soldiers refuse order to kill ISIS families because in his campaign trump has promised to go after relatives of militants in Syria.
I heard about that but didn’t see that item… lol. I’m really surprised they did that.
The “reporting” from the never-going-to-happen trump presidency was almost entirely snark free, but when trump’s own words are used, there is bound to be some hilarity. Remember, the Boston Globe is the newspaper that devoted months and much leg work to tracking down the pedophiliac priests in Boston. If you haven’t seen Spotlight which is about this work of theirs, consider doing so.
