Discussion: Christie In 2009: Parents Deserve A Debate About Anti-Vaxx Concerns

Sounds like a significant portion of his NJ base consists of the type of person willing to believe anti-vaccer theories - but now he has to transition to a national audience where those people are considered to be fringe loonies.

Darr, thank you for sharing that.

His related Big Point is NJ’s “highest rate of autism in the country”.

Is it appropriate to question him on:

A. whether it IS the highest, based on statistics etc, or
B. whether it ‘being’ the highest has meaning, given somewhere has to be, or
C. HTF he arrived at connection between standard childhood disease vaccines and autism OTHER than by political pandering to ignorance, or
D. WTF his alternative plan is to that of, say, the CDC?

Nooooooooooo of course not.

Bring out your dead! [>clang<] Bring out your dead! [>clang<] You there - help me throw that body on the Plague Wagon here. (But hark yon taker of the plague dead - this be my father, who believed that the immortal soul must follow the path to exaltation of Our Lord Jeebus such that I his son made of long ago an solemn oath to him and to the God of Abraaham never to abandon his mortal remains to a Plague Wagon) Well that’s a silly f**king thing to have said then, isn’t it? Tell you what then, he’s dead now so he’s not about to complain, is he, and after we pile your old dad’s carcass aboard, feel free to jump on yourself by way of penance to the O Mighty One, if that’s your choice. Meantime, get outta the way of science and progress you stupid git, or else we’ll all be dead of the Plague!

“we need to have a conversation” well then do it.

“we need to look at this” well damn it look at it

Then act like a leader and make a decision.

In Josh’s related article, he writes:

That tendency [of Christie's to yell at people and tell them to shut up], when he's identifying genuine nonsense, is one of his more endearing qualities.

"Endearing"? Man, I hope that was snark.

The party of stupid is getting stupiderer.

Blue, luckily neither my sister nor I were paralyzed. She has developed some sequelae to the Polio (autoimmune in nature) while I have a somewhat shortened leg (1/4 inch) that caused some scoliosis in my spine. I do remember the fever and how weak I was (I could not sit up at one point).
A year or two later the Salk vaccine was in use and I remember lining up in the hall to get poked with a 4 prong needle. After that came the Sabin vaccine in sugar cubes which the kids found much more agreeable.
I am a strong believer in getting kids vaccinated against any disease we can prevent that way. It’s a benefit not just to that child but the community as a whole.

Why doesn’t Christie say “I’m not rational but…”?

The so called “herd effect”. Its true that if 95 % or so of a population are immunized it’s unlikely the other 5 % will get the disease due to shielding by the immune 95 %. But it’s no guarantee. And relying on it is no way to protect a population.

just wait for the scattered cases of polio to come… i have a very distinct memory from early childhood of being in the hospital (bronchitis in my case) and sharing the room with another girl who was in an iron lung; and scared shitless that i was going to end up in something like that.
these idiot parents don’t have a clue what they are risking. i suspect that once a couple of kids die from exposure, vaccination rates will increase.

I would like to see 100% vaccination against all the common childhood diseases. That’s the ideal but there are some circumstances in which it isn’t advisable for some kids. For example when a kid has a weakened immune response due to a chemo treatment or bone marrow transplant. So we’ll never see 100% vaccination rates, I think. And there are always the negligent parents who think it won’t happen to their kid.

Your experience is a reminder of the bad old days and it’s horrifying that a new generation unaware of them would want to willingly return

Guess that’s what they mean by touch screen.

If you point that out, they will say things like, but you don’t understand, there are so many more shots today than there were back then, hyping some generalized theory of an immune system “overburdened” by vaccines. Basically, most of these people don’t really think their children are going to get these diseases because they are relying on the rest of us to get our own children vaccinated. I hope more pediatricians divorce themselves from families refusing to get vaccines. It’s frightening for the parents of infants knowing that a visit to a doctor’s office might expose them to measles or chicken pox.

The thing is, if it is about “immune system overburden” as they claim, then they can specifically request to have the vaccines spread out over a longer period of time or given later. My mother pointed out that children who breast feed are better off with regards to their immune system than those who don’t- at least for the first year.

But, you are right. They are relying upon their child being the only one in a classroom which isn’t vaccinated when the reality is that this movement likely means that their kid is one of four or five who aren’t.
