Substitute the term “abolition of slavery” for gun control and compare the discussions now and in the first half of the 19th Century. What effect did people ‘speaking up’ have on ending slavery?
Was John Brown. the election of Abraham Lincoln and ultimately a horrific deadly civil war the only solution? Would a negotiated settlement of the war allowing the CSA to exist end slavery? Is so, when - 50 years, 100 years or ever.
Gun control is now the new abolition movement of the 21st Century. I’m not too optimistic about ‘speaking up’ having any effect. So then what?
Don’t forget Al Franken.
Schiff would be a top candidate - certainly among the most able to step into the job. I can see Gabbard running. She’s nuts, an Islamophobe, and I believe she has possible Russian connections, but is very presentable, good at PR and would carry the far left/anti Dem establishment Berner mantle. She’ll be a problem to deal with, but I don’t think Berners can quite rely on her, as she will angle for power for herself, not for a movement. Warren will run, but she’ll find it tough sledding. She fucked up bad last week and HRC voters won’t support her.
Yes. Should add him to my list.
I think he would be formidable opponent, but I don’t think he will run. He stays in the Senate. I’ve just never gotten the feeling that Franken has aspirations for the White House, which, with a crowded primary, is a big requirement. It won’t be a “listening to the voice of conscious and stepping forward for my country in a time of need” sort of scenario, which is basically the only way I see Franken running.
Now, I could see him high on quite a few people’s choice for VP. He has a rather broad reach across both wings of the party right now.
We won’t have a good feel for Warren’s choices till after her Senate campaign next year. If she struggles like she did in 2012, I think she stays put. The two big points against her are her age and her questionable campaigning skills. She has to put that second one to rest with a huge blow out in 2018 to even consider going forward.
I’d like to see Joe Kennedy as a VP nomination, I think he needs a few more years experience before a Presidential Run.
Harris, Franken, Schiff, Booker, Kennedy, all look like good candidates to me.
Well said, Sen. Murphy. But the cynicism in me - and I have a lot on this issue - says that nothing will be done until the families of NRA executives and Republicans in Congress and State Houses are gunned down in shooting rampage mass murder events with assault weapons. I’m in no way hoping it happens - I would prefer no more gun deaths ever - but, it’s what I think it will take to get them to budge on the issue of commonsense gun regulations. And even that might not be enough for some.
FOX and Friends
Fox News host Ainsley Earhardt asserted on Monday that the dozens of
people killed at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas had gone to the
right place to be shot because they were close to Jesus at the time of
their death.
“We’ve been reporting this shouldn’t happen in a church,” Earhardt
said during an interview with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ®. “But I was
downstairs talking with some people that work here that we all talk
about our faith and we share the same beliefs. We were saying there’s no
other place we would want to go other than church.”
“Because I’m there asking for forgiveness,” she continued. “I feel
very close to Christ when I’m there. So, I’m trying to look at some
positives here and know that those people are with the Lord now and
experiencing eternity and no more suffering, no more sadness anymore.
Maybe rebranding? Gun “management”?
I wouldn’t be the leased bit surprised to see them hold to Gun Rights even after their children, grandchildren, mothers, etc were killed in one of these mass shootings.
Reports coming out now include reports of automatic gunfire heard from the property of the shooter in the days leading up to the slaughter. That failed to draw the attention of law enforcement.
Let me disclosure I have no facts to back up this time line: So, a known violent person is inspired by LV shooting. Buys a bump stock for the assault rifle and high capacity magazines he already owns. Practices a few days to get the full auto feature working. Waits for Sunday morning. Somewhere in America another massacre is being planned.
Meanwhile back at the Congressional Ranch, right minded Representative and Senators are quietly celebrating the tidy CODA (Cost Of Dying Adjustment) in their NRA checks that assure their unresisting acceptance of massacre by machine gun. Almost a century after the St. Valentine’s Day massacre we have come full circle to allow it back into our daily lives.
Guess what’s the hot new item being sole at the local gun shows?
As long as people like this are willing to abdicate responsibility over societal ills, nothing will change - from mass killings to misogyny - pick your sin. The first, second and third thought should be: What can I do to change the future into a better place, not, thank god, a god was there.
This omnipotent guy god of hers sure didn’t do much to protect these people. Guess he’s not going to be very effective helping her win the wars she likes, or whatever else she’s asking for.
I’m getting really really tired of these infantile yo-yos.
It is long past time to label the NRA a terrorist organization.
I think she is a bantamweight…or flyweight. I know military record is her main qualification but she is still a bantamweight or less. And after her Trump interview and her Middle East trip on Trump’s behalf, I think she is going to have trouble getting the mainstream of the Democratic Party to back her. Plus, what the fuck has she ever done? I mean really?
Unfortunately, I don’t think Warren could win, so, IMHO, she shouldn’t run.
