McDaniel has two advantages- White and Republican. While Mississippi has a large African American population, being a White Republican has been a winning combination since the Southern Strategy kicked in. Being labeled a racist might actually help gain votes in MS. This seat might be more winnable than Alabama, but remember that the only reason the Alabama seat was won was because enough Republicans peeled off and voted for a write-in candidate. While McDaniel is odious, he doesn’t seem to have the same baggage as Moore.
The African American vote sank McDaniel last time, and yes, it could happen that a strong ground game and a lot of good planning could sink him again. A primary challenger to McDaniel might be helpful in splitting the Republican vote. The problem there is 1) if the other Republican wins against McDaniel and/or 2) Dems vote against McDaniel and the other Republican wins.
I am hoping that we get a good candidate and great campaign strategy and beat McDaniel’s dick into the dirt.
These guys live in a different century and try to perpetuate a way of life that was left behind by most of the South. At least Trent Lott was honest about his bigotry.

I want to point out registering voters has long term effects well beyond the next election.
This should be Dems’s highest priority. Every election. Registering voters and bringing them out to vote. And in areas where there are IDs coming in, helping people acquire them.

McDaniel HAS been called a racist in the past. It didn’t hurt him with Republican voters.
Yes, he was involved with that blogger that snuck into the nursing house to video Cochrane’s wife, but McDaniel still got a ton of Republican votes. Since Mississippi has open primaries, African Americans crossed over and did him in. McDaniel didn’t react well to that tactic.
Amen. This has been the least priority of progressives for decades.
I used to do this regularly for the League of Women Voters in my 20s. Then Lee Atwater slandered that fine organization which championed democracy through voter registration drives, bi-partisan voter guides about candidates and issues and hosting presidential debates. It’s goal was to educate the public so they could make informed decisions and get to the polls ready to do their patriotic duty and vote…in every election. Rove made sure they never hosted a presidential debate ever again.
It’s pretty obvious today why Republicans did not want the League to continue their work and discredit it. It’s time to revive the League and the ERA. During a economic recovery, women don’t have to be afraid they will lose their jobs by fully exercising all their voice and vote to get all those other rights they still are denied by the GOP.
The most touching sign I saw a young teenager hold at the rallies read: As a woman, maybe someday I will have as many rights as a gun.
This is heartbreaking. Our parents and grandparents said Never Again and here are our children and grandchildren having to say it again.
I’ve never figured out why the small group of highly educated people running MS are so afraid of the outside world. They really are. And it’s holding them back economically versus their emerging Deep South neighboring states.
They must realize at some level they have to venture into the 21st century. If they don’t give up some of those useless frills and pretended glory of the past, they will be eaten alive by technological advances and an ever increasing connected wold. The world will treat these Republican gentry like slaves. The carpetbaggers are coming and they could care less Who You Are.
MS must give up their prejudices and pretenses and make sure everyone in that state gets a good education with the freedom to innovate so they can evolve. The sooner the better. Dem candidates should start pointing that out to the voters. Their quiet little lifestyle and even more meager livelihoods are in very real danger of ending. The anarchy to come is at the door.
