Lawrence O’Donnell had a guest on last night - Curly Haugland, RNC Standing Committee on Rules - who had some enlightening things to say about the delegate counts - Trump’s in particular.
The first time they know who gets to the magic number of 1237 is not from the poll results or the RNC head count but at the convention after the first round of voting takes place.
Paraphrasing what he said:
Convention rules don’t allow winner-take-all results (every delegate gets a vote). Some delegates come from states with open primaries (too many open primaries is a violation; delegates could be challenged). Some of the delegates are hand-picked by the contenders - another concern.

Sounds like maybe tRump sent down his goons to roughen up the delegation to get their way without looking a little too obvious. Wouldn’t surprise me. Seems everyone in the GOP is starting to play hardball over those precious delegates now that they realize every single one of them is looking like a necessary chit.

It honestly didn’t sound like Trump had to lift a finger. This guy Yob had done a fantastic job alienating the locals as a carpetbagging meddler and the Virgin Islands GOP had already figured him out and DQ’d him. If it wasn’t for that federal judge issuing a stay, he would have been 86’d a long time ago.

Sounds like a real battle of the raging douche-nozzles down there. Whatever the technicalities, the guy’s a complete carpetbagger – “Oh, but I’ve been vacationing here for years, so I feel a real connection and I just happened to decide to move here right before running as a delegate.” Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. (Eyeroll…into facepalm.) I hope he does get disqualified – not that whoever else goes in his place will necessarily be any better or do any good, but just because this guy deserves to have his little plot fall apart over some technicality.

Based on previous TPM reports, Yob’s story wasn’t even that compelling. He showed up in one town’s election office in January, said he’d just moved into town and wanted to register, and was told he had to live on the island for a minimum of 90 days. So he goes to another town’s election’s office and registers, claiming he’d moved there 90 days prior. He got caught red handed.
This was a case of him not thinking far head enough to do basic legwork on local laws. Granted he couldn’t have foresaw 90 days ahead of time to know he’d be moving there given the rapid development of Trump’s rise, but still. If he had been more careful he could have avoided getting caught flat footed trying to lie about his arrival date.

Too bad — I will miss the chance to hear John Yob and Ted Yoho mentioned together. Of course, there is always obvious anagram (h/t Charlie Pierce) Reince Priebus. What planet do all these guys come from?
All true, but in actuality, he just needs to be there 90 days before the general. He tried to dishonestly do what he could have just done honestly.
