@sophie_brown–The Mormons I know here in Oregon are great people–really “All American” in the old-fashioned sense of the word. While we do not discuss politics (or religion), I cannot imagine that they are supporting Trump, and I am even more certain they are monumentally embarrassed by Chaffetz.
A vote is an endorsement --you’re absolutely right. I’m a public school teacher. I don’t talk about my politics in class, although anyone with half a brain should be able to figure them out. But if my students ask, I’ll explain. And I recognize that when I explain to a student why I am voting for a certain candidate, I am endorsing that candidate. That’s the whole point behind ethos in a piece of rhetoric–the speaker asks you to accept his or her judgement based on his credibility. We are asking a person to basically say “I trust your judgment.”
Chaffetz is saying “Vote for me. I have good judgment and will choose what is best for America. But don’t read anything into my vote for president. I am just voting for the guy-- I don’t endorse him.”
You can’t have it both ways. If you are going to let me know your voting decisions, you are telling me that your judgment is sound and should be respected. If your judgment can’t be respected, I should not vote for you for any office–and especially the one you hold.
Shorter Chaffetz: I couldn’t possibly face my daughter if I endorsed Trump but I’m sure able to tell my daughter that I voted for this guy who probably raped a girl younger than she is.
point taken. but i was being serious. just an observation.
Chaffetz is an ingratiating asshole. That is all.
Your vote is the ultimate endorsement, you little weasel!
This makes me smile.
Huh?
So his wife and daughter must be used to having a bona fide LIAR in the house!
Sadly, we’re going to be seeing and hearing more from this moron in the days ahead. Why doesn’t Chaffetz go and play mumblety-peg in the Tidal Basin with Louis Gohmert?
I’m voting for what I feel is the lesser of two evils. How hard would that be to say, and it’s pretty much what I think he’s trying to convey.
