I would have more sympathy for this hunter if he didnât already have a record here in America with regards to hunting laws. He was put on probation for killing a bear that was out of a hunting zone, then lying to authorities about where that animal was taken.
So when you try to give him the benefit of the doubt, and say that the guides are responsible because they are the ones who lured Cecil out of his protected gameland area and told the hunter to take the shot, it becomes more difficult. Because this guy already has a record for taking game from a prohibited area.

Yeah these hero myths had to be built on some sort of physical prowess. And two hundred years ago, North America was still filled with big dangerous animals, so they could serve as an appropriate target. We should be grateful that these stories do not revolve around killing Natives or slaves.
But now the world is running out of big mammals, except for humans.

This hunter was an asshole, yes. There have been asshole hunters all over the world since hunting started. Itâs not an American thing, itâs a global problem.

No itâs not. Not so that it has any contemporary resonance.
This guy is a heartless dick, plain and simple. To kill an animal, even with a compound bow, one still has to get close enough to clearly see the victim. The collar would have been plainly visible.

One gets the feeling this was a cannedâand not altogether very interesting or insightful essay (âDaniel Boone and Davy Crockett were things and the bison herds were wiped out by railroad excursionistsâ)âto which a one paragraph news hook was appended when the opportunity presented.

Near where I live we have a park with a big enclosure where large North American animals are allowed to roam. A few years ago some asshole decided to shoot a buffalo from the tourist overlook. They caught the shooter and put him in jail. If a lion has a pet name, is clearly identified, and normally lives in a protected zone but is baited out by guides who should know better, that isnât hunting. That is simply slaughter. I donât care if he used a bow. This has nothing to do with Americaâs hunting history.

Cecilâs death was a tragic, disgusting, cowardly act by a craven bunch of butchers who lured what was, for all intents and purposes, a lion that was acclimated to humans, a mascot and near-tamed lion, âŚlured him with a dead carcass off protected lands to a private piece of property. There the Big Game Hunter, a dentist from Minneapolis, shot him with an arrow. It took Cecil more than 40 hours to suffer and die. He was tracked, shot, beheaded and skinned.
Is THIS what is deep rooted in Americaâs history??? There is NO damned piece of Cecilâs wanton death at the hands of the lowest of the low caliber human beings of which any decent human being could possibly be proud!
The lure of putting a preserved piece of an animalâs carcass on the wall is simply beyond me. We and our sons have numerous trophies on our wall of animalsâŚBeautiful photos of beautiful and rare creatures we tracked or were lucky enough to see close enough to photograph. I look at those âtrophiesâ and marvel at that animalâŚand I wonder if and hope that it lived to reproduce and allow subsequent generations to see such a creature and get their âtrophyâ âŚwith a camera.
The outrage around the world has taken its toll on the cowardly and craven dentist, Palmer. He has gone into hiding, has deleted all his âbraveâ accounts of his Big Game hunts and shut down his web page and personal web site and has âapologizedâ, to NO avail, and his practice has now closed for the time being. Wonder how he likes being hunted. Karma is indeed a bitch, Mr. PalmerâŚENJOY! âCecilâsâ pain is, after suffering your arrow, at long last, over. I have a feeling your pain has only begun.

According to data from the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the U.S. is the worldâs largest importer of African lion parts for trophies and for commercial purposes. Between 1999 and 2008, U.S. citizens claimed 64% of the international market for lion parts. The data show that number has been increasing.
It may be a global problem, but like many global problems, weâre one of if not the leading cause of the problem and thus, itâs our responsibility to man up (for real) and do something about it.

Why should he go to jail?
Why do some liberals desire to outlaw everything they donât like? I donât find anything thrilling about hunting but it isnât illegal, so why should it be outlawed?
Except in Texas deer baiting is legal for hunting purposes. The guy I worked for in Texas went on one of the deer âhuntsâ and came back claiming how wonderful it was. Because of the baiting the deer came within yards of the blind and were little more than target practice. So baiting does have a proud tradition in some states.

Why are people making this out as if he slaughtered some innocent villagers in Africa instead of a big cat?
