Catholic University does not permit events that advocate beliefs contrary to those of the Catholic Church.
What âbeliefsâ is a movie screening advocating? And hasnât the Pope himself indicated that the Church needed to be more open to LGBT individuals?
And really, they chose to nitpick about the size of the rainbow flag on the flyer??? Thatâs an excuse, itâs not a reason.
I lived here in San Francisco through those horrible days in November 1978 when not only Harvey Milk, the first gay politician in the country, was murdered but the mayor George Moscone was as well. They were murdered by a homophobe who later killed himself when he emerged from prison after being convicted of manslaughter because of the Twinkie defense. The film is not only a testament to Harvey and Georgeâs lives but also a superb film. Itâs very sad that the closed minds of the Catholic are using as a primary objection what is truly a false flag to deny students the chance to see an enlightened presentation of the origins of the LGBT movement.
"Bob Jones University v. United States, 461 U.S. 574 (1983), was a decision by the United States Supreme Court holding that the religion clauses of the First Amendment did not prohibit the Internal Revenue Service from revoking the tax exempt status of a religious university whose practices are contrary to a compelling government public policy, such as eradicating racial discrimination."
Does Catholic University enjoy a tax exempt status?
Is eradicating LGBT discrimination a compelling government public policy?
Just curious.
Harvey wasnât the first openly gay candidate/elected official in the country. In California yes, he was the first openly gay candidate elected but, not the first in the country. Elaine Noble was elected State Representative in Massachusetts in 1974, becoming the first openly gay candidate elected to office in the country and in Massachusetts.
The University has to respect 2000 years of the Churchâs teaching on this subject. After prayerful consideration they have released the following statement to explain the religious underpinnings behind their decision to ban this movie based on the late civil rights leader:
âIf you see gays, youâll become one yourself, because Jesus.â
CAThOLIc UniversITY AwarE of THE faCt THAt lesbos, gays and fake men and fake women are DEviANts!!1!!!one!!!
I donât understand why one would attend a university or voluntarily associate with an organization whose principles and beliefs were so different from his/her own. As a strong believer in equality, it would never occur to me to apply for admission to a university whose policies discriminated against any group, or advocated such discrimination. Certainly in this case, the university has a right to set their own policies, which are not a secret from anyone. If you believe in equality, why not just go elsewhere?
Just another example of the true sickness and bigotry of all organized religionsty of oraganized religion
By âcompelling government public policy,â they mean âAct of Congress.â With the exception of DADT repeal in 2010, Congress has mostly been in the business of legitimating discrimination against gays.
I confess that I attended Catholic University back in the 70s. It was a profoundly different place then than it is now. Now I could not in good conscience recommend it to anyone for anything any more than I would Bob Jones or ORU. I am appalled at what they have become, though in the end, it is Catholic University, so I am not surprised.
CUA back then was a school that taught the essence of a liberal education was the ability to think critically, no matter where it led. The classical liberal education was the whole focus of the university. It was all about learning to think, and learning to learn.
It comes down to money, the fact that half of the board of trustees are catholic bishops, and that it is a âpontificalâ university (meaning that hit has a special charter granted by pope Leo XIII) so the catholic hierarchy feels it belongs to them. The catholic hierarchy has taken a sharp turn to the right from the old days of the 70s. That means that since it is theirs to control to a sad degree, so has the university. Academic freedom? Not so much. Google Charlie Curran.
Everything I hear or see about the place now disgusts me.
That is not the school I went to. That school is dead. How very sad.
Harvey Milk looks a little like a happy Hitler without the mustache.
Keep clinging to delusional right wing fantasies, and watch as more and more young people decide not to have anything to do with your bullshit fairy tale club, Catholic church.
Just more proof that people who are extremely fundamentally religious have a cognitive disability akin to being regressed into the early development stages. Here, what we are witnessing is the effect of never developing object permanence, which is something that actually comes fairly early for most toddlers. So for example, instead of understanding that when you hide the ball under the blanket, the ball is still there, these idiots think that if they can hide the ball, it ceases to exist. I suppose that makes it no wonder they are enraged anew every time gay people crop up somewhere. Perhaps we can call this âfundamentalist peekabooââŚsince the whole peekaboo game with babies is just a play on the early developmental stages of object permanence.
You know who else looked like a happy Hitler without the moustache?
Shaved Hitler being tickled, thatâs who!
Usury is an abomination, too, right?
I kind of think he looks vaguely John Hamm-ish.
They are awash in a noxious flood of Santorum.
Yeah, so if we avoid screening the film then maybe they wonât get the gay.
It the bishops think that they can stonewall on this they will find out that that term has more than one meaning in relation to this issue. If you read the statement literally, you could argue it wouldnât permit services for other faith traditions on the campus, which is contrary to a whole lot of Catholic colleges and universities that I am aware of.
