Discussion for article #236178

I’m impressed as well. Not enough to go to Catholic… but impressed nonetheless.

The new Catholic message will be welcomed by many socialists.

Count me among the impressed.

“I read all the speeches of the pope, his commentaries, and if the pope continues this way, I will go back to praying and go back to the church, and I’m not joking,”

This is not a small thing.
I can almost imagine a Church without the hypocrisy which caused me to throw in the towel years ago.
I’d love to sit in a pew with Raul and feel the change…

A lot of Baby Boomer Catholics are thinking the same thing if only in spirit not deed. It’s got to be the worst news in the world for the GOP and conservatives in general. A united Catholic community demanding social justice could be a formative obstacle for the Koch Brothers and Christian Coalition to overcome just with their silly rhetoric and SuperPacs.

If this Pope successfully unites these fallen away believers and moderates within the church regarding immigration policies and income inequality, there will be no turning back to the Right in our grandchildrens’ lifetime and probably for much longer than that.

Well, it’s still a mixed bag. The Catholic Church has a long way to go on a number of other issues, especially in the civil rights arena. But even there it seems this Pope is tentatively, gently, moving in the right direction, and that is a good thing too. I think the Pope’s tone, if not content, challenges the Christian fundamentalist’s reality as well.

Except that Raul is a communist. And according to the orthodoxy of Lenin might make it dogmatically difficult for Raul to become a Christian I would have thought. But this pope is an amazing man.

Look, if Jesus returned next week as the social justice advocate that he actually was, I would definitely go to his rally.

They won’t be united. Some will have their knives out, you can count on it. These changes will not go unnoticed by the donors.

But Castro was a Catholic before he was a Communist.
If it hadn’t been for the laissez-faire attitude of the Cuban Church toward Batista in the Fifties and its close financial ties with the sugar bosses, who knows what would have happened?

There’s always been an undercurrent of accommodation in the need for the survival of the Catholic Church.

This Pope seems to understand that the perpetuation of the message of Jesus is the best way to safeguard the continued existence of the institution.

So we have yet to see how this will play out. After all, Jesus was a radical. Can the Church actually follow him?

“I always studied at Jesuit schools.”

Making him better educated than most of the House of Representatives.

Jesus was executed by the Romans on demand of the Sanhedrin (the conservatives of the Temple) because in the Sanhedrin’s eyes He was excessively liberal. Odd, isn’t it, that a strong liberal killed by conservatives, in time is coopted and used by political conservatives in our time and presented as some sort of arch conservative.

You needn’t go that far, Raul. Though, I admit it would be fun watching the heads of half of the American Catholics spontaneously explode.

Of such steps is history made.

Just imagine a few days after Raul receives Communion since 1959 on the triumphal papal visit to Havana thus summer, his fellow churchman John Boehner will welcome His Holiness to a Joint Session of Congress.

Priceless!

Either way they’ll find something to carp and bitch about.

They have to, they think it’s their job.
