Discussion: Carson: US Energy Independence Would Have Led To Bin Laden Capture

Discussion for article #241877

I once commented here that Ben Carson is a smart person.
I retract that statement.

just because you believe it doesn’t make it true or make it a fact…

Facts and reality and history may indicate that Arab states had no loyalty to Bin Laden, and the truth may be that my comments about this, like on most subjects, are total BS that I really know nothing about. But, I believe otherwise - and I’m Dr. Ben Carson, the former neurosurgeon, and I’m the smartest person in the room and I’m always right.

Talk about rejecting our reality and substituting his own.

ā€œWell, you may think that they did not have any loyalty to him, but I believe otherwise,ā€ Carson replied.

And THIS is really much of the problem with teabaggers (well, that and racism, sexism, hatred of anything to do with progress, etc.) As far as they’re concerned, what they believe trumps any bit of actual reality. Any opinion (especially ā€œmineā€) is just as good as some other opinion regardless of any sort of proven analysis. You got it, Uncle Ben and thanks for playing.

EDIT TO ADD: This is such a stupid thing to say, I’m not really sure where to begin. Even IF the Arab states were loyal to Bin Laden, they would know that it was nothing more than an immediate bluff on our part and a rather cheap one at that. It would take this country years to be ā€œpetroleum independentā€; we’re not talking about some kind scenario that would be available for a long time. I’m not saying we shouldn’t be energy independent; I’m just saying that it’s a lot more complicated than Uncle Ben understands and OPEC knows this. They’re not stupid by any means.

Please keep talking, Dr. Carson, it is so interesting to hear your opinions…

He really did get through college without taking a single core curriculum class, didn’t he?

Did you realized that Carson has a Masters Degree in Mideast Studies?

No? Well you may not think there is any record of such academic achievement, but I believe otherwise. Absent a qualification, he wouldn’t have any basis to be flapping his jaws, and I can’t believe such bad things about a Doctor!

Well maybe, but here were no black people in Mayberry.

This latest is like a teenager ā€œtrulyā€ figuring out the world between bong hits.

You know, there exists this interesting concept of ā€œepistemology.ā€ How do we know that a ā€˜fact’ is truly correct?

For Carson it is really simple. He lays the bong aside briefly, and just freely bloviates before his next hit. His fact-free bloviations, unfettered by research, evidence, or study, those are objective truth for him. Voila!

I think somebody sampled a little too much of the nitrous oxide in the operating room…

I think Carson spent too much time in the anesthesia department’s drug cabinet when he was a surgeon.

There are plenty of things that you believe otherwise. And that’s what scares the shit out of so many of us.

And that’s the sort of logic that is available to a person who has spiders spinning webs in his brain. And in Dr. Knowlittle’s case, it’s both tragic and ironic.

And:
On evolution: ā€œIf there is a force evolving to the maximum, why isn’t everything human?ā€
On climate change: ā€œIt may be warming. It may be cooling.ā€
On ā€˜Obamacare’: ā€œIt’s the worst thing to happen to this nation since slavery.ā€
On gay rights: ā€œBeing gay is a choice. Absolutely.ā€
And on and on____Perhaps he was a decent surgeon, but he’s then truly an idiot savant.

Well, take it a bit further. Let’s say the moderate Arab states (I wonder who he considers that to be, btw?) did have loyalty to Bin Laden. And let’s further assume that they did actually think we could become petroleum independent overnight (because how hard could THAT be, right??).

Does Carson think that the same people who now can’t combat a ~30,000 strong ISIS were going to sally forth into Afghanistan and capture Bin Laden? Or Pakistan? Neither of which is a major oil exporter?

And how exactly would that have prevented 9-11? They were going to invade Afghanistan preemptively?? That Bin Laden was somehow going to be the USA’s #1 boogeyman even as the Bush administration was specifically making him NOT, and ignoring basically all terrorist threats to us in the world?

Well I’m no expert…nor is Carson but here’s my take. Had the USA not entered Afghanistan there would’ve been no reason for bin Laden to leave. Afghanistan is not an oil exporting nation. So, had the USA used an oil Independence approach it’s doubtful there would’ve been a place to put that lever into that situation. If Carson’s saying the other oil exporting nations would’ve demanded Afghanistan cough up bin Lased in order to keep oil prices up I think he needs to bone up on all of that. Saudi Arabia was a closet supporter of bin Laden and they run the Middle East Oil show. And of course bin Laden could hide from OPEC just like he hid from the USA and it’s coalition. If I was him I’d prefer the former.

I think you have a right to speculate in a debate. But this goes way passed that and is just dumb assed Carson shit.

I don’t know about Bin Laden’s capture. But it was President Obama’s election that led to Bin Laden’s just reward.
