I wonder what the incentives were for United Technologies, this wasn’t just the first example of I alone can do this"
So the company gave up 65 mil in cost savings that would have more efficiently been spent in Mexico by 1,000 Mexicans to use as leverage to perpetuate its 7.1 bil in federal contracts and grants regardless of necessity. Sounds like Trump’s idea of bringing jobs here is to pass on the cost of inefficiencies and Trump meddling to the taxpayers and claim credit for the trickster spin Trump puts on it. Such BS that his voters will swallow hook, line and sinker.
No doubt, Trump will want to keep an unimproved education system because he says he “loves” the uneducated.
Gosh, you’d think Trump bargained them into a corner from the way Faux has reported it all day.
Except what really happened is that Pence is Chariman of the Board of the economic agency that is going to hand Carrier all sorts of corporate welfare (automatically Chairman because Governor). So Trump was 'negotiating" with his own VP to offer blood money to Carrier to stay in the country. Then they pretend it was the magic of Trump’s negotiating and economic genius…when, again, it’s just the same type of corporate welfare and “incentives” crap that the GOP/Teatrolls howled about as socialism, tyranny, interference in the free market, big brother bullying private business, etc., whenever Obama did it (think GM, which saved over 10K jobs and yet Obama was demonized for it).
THEN, we find out that the primary motivator wasn’t even the corporate welfare, but rather more like the parent corporation not wanting to shit where it eats and make its $6B government contract pie taste like hepatitis.
WHAT. A. FUCKING. JOKE. And the MSM ran with the GOP/Teatroll/Trump narrative ALL FUCKING DAY.
So saving GM doesn’t count,right?
@cfkdaddy @zedindylll @darcy
My how quickly you forget the realities and complexities of the day arm chair warriors. If Obama would have done any of that…oh never mind.
late edit- at a coffee shop this evening and glanced up at TV which was on CNN,
“Trump works with Carrier to save 1000 jobs” on the stream. Wolf Blitzer’s show.
Seems to me that they’re all looking for a populist hero - well, isn’t that what Trump ran on?
Perhaps a jaunty new logo such as this is now in order for Carrier
Despite heavy lobbying in favor of one of the existing projects, it soon became apparent that private industry could not turn out a car for only 990RM. Thus, Hitler chose to sponsor an all-new, state-owned factory using Ferdinand Porsche’s design (with some of Hitler’s design constraints, including an air-cooled engine so nothing could freeze). The intention was that ordinary Germans would buy the car by means of a savings scheme (“Fünf Mark die Woche musst du sparen, willst du im eigenen Wagen fahren” – “Five marks a week you must put aside, if you want to drive your own car”), which around 336,000 people eventually paid into. However, the entire project was financially unsound, and only the corruption and lack of accountability of the Nazi regime made it possible.
We do not know what the Carrier-union labor contract says about reductions in force and layoffs. My guess is there is provision for the company to re-negotiate labor contract under circumstances of reductions in force and layoffs to deal with changing economic conditions. If the company goes back to the union and says we can hire 1,500 Mexican workers for what it costs to pay 1,000 Indianans, the company will use this as leverage to say we need an agreement to cut wages by a third, but “we will settle for 25% cuts across-the-board.” So these so called 1,000 “jobs” may not be all Trump is cracking them up to be.
A bunch of you are arguing that Obama should have been doing things like this…do we really want to go down a road where the president is forcing businesses to behave they way they want? That businesses are beholden to the whims of the presidency? That way is not good, it takes us further into the autocratic system that we’re all worried about with Trump…and it’s no excuse to say that we should force businesses to do things we want because it’s good. Passing regulations that businesses follow is the best way to do it, because they get reviewed by lots of people (including the public) and are better for it.
Republicans really should be aghast at Trump’s implied threats against a company to force it to do something he wants…that’s about as anti-capitalist as it gets, and more like what you see in Russia. Just more evidence that the Republicans are happy to let anything go, even if it goes against their principles, if a Republican is in charge.
Obama should have arrested every CxO and board member and trader on wall street, perp walked them with hoods on their heads to jail, siezed their assets, and given a press conference where every FBI and DOJ agent was instructed to drop everything and focus on bringing Wall Street to heel. Boots on necks.
You have the mind of a superlative autocrat.
McConnell had already said he was going to make O a one-term prez. No way was he going to hold hearings and hold accountable GOPers for the housing meltdown while also setting up O for success.
And would make a quintessential Trump supporter, one would imagine since they seem to think alike.
I’m talking political theater, not policy. Policy wise, Obama saved our bacon. But if the catastrophe of the Great Recession and the L-shaped recovery could have been yoked more effectively to Republicans + an unregulated Wall Street, maybe the wind would have been taken out of the Tea Party’s sails a bit, etc.
But yeah I agree, hindsight blah blah blah.
Oh, Dear.
Satire is no longer necessary.
State resources ($700k per year) to a private corporation to save jobs. Smells like national socialism to me.
Both are usually the same, possibility more so in the upcoming year.
Please explain, because '17 might totally change that word’s definition.
a bernie sanders solution he actually put forward…(and was also part of his platform…)
but…the real issue is why didnt obama do this? and why has he been at odds his entire presidency with unions who repeatedly asked for his personal and public support for these type of solutions to outsourcing?
obama gets credit for workers rights with companies that profit off of taxpayers but has FAILED miserably when it comes to outsourcing american jobs.
Which is it?
The president should pick ‘winners and losers’ or should he look the other way?
I knew it - it’s that populism thing.
It’s so dangerous.
