“Catastrophic” just doesn’t work for this level of destruction. It’s apocalyptic.
But now is not the time to be talking about climate change.
Also,
“We’ve had quite some looting that has taken place, unfortunately,” said William Marlin, prime minister of the Dutch side of the island.
I am always suspicious of statements like this after these kinds of events. We all know how it works: White people searching for potable water are “scavenging”; black people looking for water are “looting.”
I just spoke with a niece in the Augusta, GA area. She said they’ve already cancelled school for Monday, and preparations are in ultra-high gear for sheltering not only the locals but the influx of people from the coast.
Further south they’re turning I-16 into a four-lane one-way freeway all the way from Savannah to Macon.
At least they have somewhere to go.
In the Caribbean, there isn’t anyplace - you are where you are on most islands. Anguilla is tiny, for instance. There is no place to go - it’s flat - and no place to hide.
It’s a miracle the death toll isn’t higher.
And poor Chiapas Mexico on top of everything else a mag 8 earthquake with Jose on its heels.
Don’t Worry, Folks. Help Is On The Way!
About the looting/scavenging: yes, yes, yes.
I hope your niece and family remain safe. I’ve got some connections to that area too.
I hope everyone is safe.
Nice positivity, but not everyone is safe, sadly.
Oh, I fear the death toll in the Caribbean will be much higher and homes are searched. And this is just the reported deaths with many going unreported.
As you say, there is no where to go and no where to hide on these islands and a cat 4 or 5 is just horrific.
