I agree – “If I have to be that one person, I will be it.” This is a powerful subject “I” statement coming from a Republican Senator I find almost stunning.
This cooperation thing…
We need to give it a name so people will see it more clearly.
Maybe Unified Senate Action?
Undivided Sentient Approach?
United States of America?
It’s unlikely that even 10 Republican Senators would ever vote “yes” on this bill. I don’t know if McConnell realizes that yet but, if he doesn’t, he’s really lost touch.
It would appear that some Republicans are finally realizing what it takes to"govern."
In our world turned upside down, the penalty on ‘conservatives’ for their healthcare failure is bipartisanship. Wow! Maybe we need to make conservatives fail allot more so we all can finally start working together again. You know— bipartisan style, just like the good-old-days.
One of Kennedy’s great regrets in life was not figuring out a way to cut
a deal with Richard Nixon over his proposal to provide universal
healthcare in 1971. He changed his mind in 1973 and came close to
reaching agreement with Nixon, but by then AMA opposition combined with
the distraction of Watergate took it off the table, not to return for
another two decades. (http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2009/12/kennedy-and-healthcare-reform/)
Let’s not make the same mistake again. If we can construct a bipartisan health plan, however imperfect, we should go for it.
The other hard R “Nos” are Collins and Murkowski.
No. The Democrats are interesting in Governing. The Republicans are interested in Power. Those are two very different things.
Crap! She’s more of a Democrat than Joe Manchin!
And then there’s Zombie Resurrections.
I can’t remember off the head where I read it, but apparently those two were approaching Senate Democrats about the matter.
Health care is one of many Pandora Boxes (gun safety is another) for the USA. We are so far down the road with our model we will never shift to “the European Model.” So as you stated we need to work to make corrections to the ACA (and stop calling it Obama Care as that emotionally clouds the issue) to make it more functional for all citizens.
Well as I understand it Germany allows private insurances companies to provide insurance but only as a not for profit. I think that would be the next thing to push for that could happen if we get enough Ds in washington.
And I love to call it Obamacare to keep rubbing Rs noses in it. Fuck their emotional clouds!
“I only see it through the lens of a vulnerable population who needs help
and can refuse to vote for me .
Capito means ‘understood’ now, in modern Italian. So, actually a good name for one who both understands and leads.
“I only see it through the lens of a vulnerable population who needs help, who I care about very deeply,”…
How can that be a true statement and also a statement coming from a republican? I don’t buy the ‘good republican’ concept - oxymorans all the way down.
Sounds to me like she knows what the others won’t admit. The bill is dead and she won’t have to be the deciding vote but it sounds really staunchly and committed to act like she might be.
I’m not sure what progress would come from the Democrats getting involved. The Republicans don’t agree on much but one thing they do agree on is healthcare for all is an awful idea and Democrats are the enemy for getting that ball rolling.
In fact, current Democratic input isn’t required to help them out, they could implement HillaryCare or just go back to ObamaCare prior to them ripping the guts out of it.
Take the ‘mean’ out of the equation and improvements abound.
Does anyone have what appears to be a realistic whip count? ie, not just saying they could vote ‘no’ but those who appear to be pretty solid 'no’s?
I refuse to believe the conservative ‘it doesn’t go far enough’ coalition is real. I think if they were the only ones standing in the way, they would find a way to declare victory and vote ‘yes’ exactly has the Freedom Caucus did.
But many states with GOP senators would be financially devastated by this repeal. They will through people off their subsidized insurance plans, but they’re not going to throw grammy and grampy out of nursing homes so the states will have to pay for that care out of their own budgets. The ‘grants’ won’t be enough and they don’t have any room in their budgets. Same for the opioid impacted states (these are white people affected!). So how on earth does the Rob Portman’s of the world do this to their states?
- Collins (ME)
- Capito? (W.V).
- Murkowski (AK)? LIke Capito, how can she possible vote to financially devastate her state and her voters?
- Portman (OH)?
5, Cotton (AR)? He was a part of the ‘working group’. We he really bought off so easily? - Boozman (AR)?
- ?
While I’ve pretty much lost hope the logical part of my brain keeps coming back to the very practical problems of what happens if they jump off the cliff.
You are referring to the phrase “capisce,” which comes from the Latin “capere” which means to seize or to grasp.
The correct Italian would be “capisci.”
Italian was my first language: Capito means ‘understood’, as in ‘got that’-- Hai capito bene?
