Discussion: Cantor Campaign Spent More On Steak Houses Than Opponent Spent On Entire Race

Discussion for article #223805

If you are going to lose, at least serve a nice meal. That Cantor - so classy.

If Cantor was so confident in his victory, why did he feel he needed to raise $5M? Clearly he raised money just for the sake of it, and viewed it as a way to supplement his income.

While I’m glad he lost, since I can’t stand the guy, having one more bagger means we are that much closer to default the next time the debt ceiling needs to be raised.

Its how it all works. Leadership guys have access to lots of donors, and are expected to spend it via republican consultants. That’s how you become and stay in leadership…lots of monetary favors out there.

Which is why this has never happened before. Leadership is safe because they are so well insulated with the money and favors that makes the whole party work. For someone in his position to lose to an outsider in a primary…is nearly unfathomable.

Its going to be interesting to see just how Brat ran his campaign. I am guessing at this point that it was seriously invested in shoe leather and knocking on doors…ie, ground game.

More and more the ad buying, back scratching consultant strategy that republicans love to employ are turning up zeros. Ground games with the power of micro targeting is the way to invest in a campaign.

And late night strategy meetings at Krystal’s isn’t just easier on the budget than steak house meetings…its the stuff that inspires the volunteers knocking on all those doors.

@DaveyJones64 : Great insight, thanks.

It’s possible Brat didn’t do anything and simply lucked into it if people couldn’t stand Cantor and would vote for anyone but him.

It’s worse than that. A ranking member raising $5M, sure, whatever. You can always redistribute it to other candidates, PACs, etc.

But a ranking member spending virtually every dollar of the $5M he took in? In a primary?! It tells you he knew damn well he was in danger of losing, no matter what they’re saying today about crossover Democratic votes.

@semiotix : His internal polling said he was up 34 points. I don’t think he was sweating it all and used the money in a Palin-esque way to upgrade his lifestyle.

Maybe. It’s a weird situation from top to bottom, of course.

He wouldn’t have been threatened by the Democratic opponent. He’s not running for President. He already had a leadership post… the leadership post. So why spend that kind of money? Cantor already has the steak-dinner lifestyle to whatever extent he wants it. I could see him wanting to pile on a huge stompin’ victory over this nobody, just to send a message to the Tea Party.

The polls are confusing too. Everyone is saying that he picked a titanically bad pollster, one known for giving just this sort of exactly-wrong result. And yet he chose them, and presumably they were telling him what he wanted to hear. And yet, this weird flood of money. And yet, and yet, and yet…

Well, anyway, we know how the story ends. That’s the important part, I guess!

“And to add insult to injury,” said Cantor, “Bobby made my steak well done! There was more juice in my dick than on that plate!”

I think this one Steakhouse-statistic proves how sleazy, incompetent and untrustworthy Eric Cantor is. I hope that all Republican donors exercise more direct oversight on how candidates spend their money and to make sure that they get the return on investment they are owed and richly deserve.

Clearly he was living high off the steer. In fairness we don’t know how much dirty money was pushed into the campaign in so called independent expenditures against him.

You just described the Romney campaign too. Same model.

Well it was so long ago, 1899.

You’re supposed to serve the red meat to your wingnut constituents, not eat it all yourself.

Cantor spent all his dough on filet mignon and prime rib, while Brat was eating… himself?

Extra Kraut please…

Something tells me this anecdote had more to do with Cantor’s loss than immigration or any actual policy issue. The question is, how will the voters in Virginia’s 7th react when Brat himself inevitably starts indulging in this sort of behavior?
