Discussion: Canadian PM Says Shooting Rampage Was Terrorism

Discussion for article #229220

My opinion is that these converts have simply found another route for their Angry Man Syndrome. Life was so unfair to them and now they’re pissed off.

You’ll call me prejudice against muslims (which I am), but this is just one more costly example of the fact that Islam is not a peaceful religion, but one that inspires violent cowardly acts such as these.

I don’t have any problems with any other religions (except some of the born-again, wing-nut assholes our country has spawned), but I have to admit that I believe every muslim is a potential danger to us, and should be sent back to Mecca!

Maybe someone will cover this on the #muslimapology twitter feed?
This is serious stuff, Islam for lack of a better word needs to have its ‘come to Jesus moment’. This is your faith? The whole ‘it’s only a small percent’ crap is wearing thin. These people are speaking for your religion and they are speaking louder than you are. What are you going to do about it?

This guy and the one who ran over 2 soldiers in Quebec on Monday were apparently on a watch list of around 90 Canadians planning to go to Syria to join ISIS, whose passports had been confiscated to prevent them from going. One wonders if it wouldn’t be better to let them go, perhaps with a tracking device inserted into their personal effects so they can be targeted for airstrikes. If they are going to be forced to remain in Canada, then it should be obvious that there is a strong likelihood they will carry out attacks and they need to be watched much more carefully than these 2 were. All in all, I would rather they were in Syria than in Canada,

There also needs to be consideration given to blocking access to web sites that preach violent jihad, Free speech, like every other right comes with some limitations when lives are threatened. If kiddie porn sites can be blocked and those who access them arrested, why not with sites that incite murder?

Well, the ebola scare is officially over. Back to Islamophobia.

Thanks for self-identifying. I guess you’ve never heard about the Christian who slaughtered an ob/gyn in his own house with a high powered rifle and scope while his family watched, or the Christian who bombed a gay bar and set another bomb on a delayed timer outside to kill first responders.

This is a costly example of precisely what it is: one man going crazy with a track record of criminality preceding his attack, who only recently converted to Islam. But to you, it’s all about Muslims, because, as you correctly point out, you’re bigoted.

Well, at least you’re somewhat self-aware so there’s hope for you yet.

Perhaps you should actually meet some Muslims. I’ve met plenty, and you may be surprised to learn not one of them tried to cut off my head. They were kind, thoughtful, mild-mannered, highly intelligent, and never, ever once blamed Christians nor Jews for the slaughter they perpetrated in Iraq.

You are aware that we killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, aren’t you?

Does that mean Glenn Beck should be shut down as well? After all, he incited a Pittsburgh right wing nut case to murder three police officers because Beck told him Obama was coming after his guns.

It’s an interesting question. Somehow there needs to be accountability for speech. I’m not quite sure how that will work, though…

I agree. They could just as well have joined Cliven Bundy at the Ranch.

I have not heard the precise words used by Mr. Beck, but if it was a direct incitement to murder, then yes, he should be accountable. No right is absolute. Uttering threats is a crime and so is incitement to murder.

Canada has hate speech laws, which the US does not. They have been used against Holocaust deniers (as they should be) and it seems to me that preaching murder against non-Muslims ought to fall under those laws also.

So, you admit you are proud you are a bigot. OK.
Islam has more than 2 billion members. No more that a couple thousand commit acts of violence (and are condemned for it by the vast majority of Muslims) and those who are violent would murder and kill for any reason (or no reason), and Islam just gives them a convenient excuse to cover their asses.
Your other problem with Islam is that it is a de-centralised religion with no “Leaders” to blame (unlike Christianity which is rigidly hierarchical.) With Christianity you can blame The Pope or The Synod or The Deacons, whomever leads that particular branch of the religion, but Islam has no such structure (in most cases.) Imam just means “teacher” (just as “Rabbi” does in Hebrew) and any of the faithful can become an Imam. This leads to a vast array of interpretations of the Koran and much strife within the Islamic community (not to mention between different sects: Sunni, Shiite, Wahhabi, etc.) This is exacerbated by many despotic rulers in Islamic countries who use religion to control the uneducated masses and deflect their anger away from them to “the infidel” (just like the Kings and Queens of Middle-Age Europe did with their Christian Serfs and their “Crusades”.)
Islam is an immature religion, and the problem is modern weapons in the hands of fanatics. In the west this results in Nazis, in the East it is the Pol Pots, in the Middle-East, they get ISIL. No difference between them.
The religion is not the problem. I don’t fear religions, I fear impoverished, ignorant, uneducated people with easy access to weapons who are controlled by despots.

Well, unless he left behind a manifesto or such, will never know what really motivated him.

There’s censorship and then there is common sense. I’ve always thought that web sites that are used as calls for violence really fall in the same category as yelling fire in a theater. However, I do understand that “the authorities” also find value in their existence as a way to better monitor these idiots as most are none too bright and share more than they realize.
