Discussion: Canada's New Assisted Suicide Law Will Be Closed To Tourists

A good example of why religion should not be a part of politics. No one should suffer so someone else won’t have his or her religious sentiments offended. All objections to granting this freedom are based in religion. It’s so sad that we’ve done this to ourselves.

I can see why the prospect of “suicide tourism” gives Canadians pause. But if this is a question of human rights – as it should be – I don’t see a rationale for denying this right to foreigners.

If people aren’t allowed to commit suicide when on vacation in Canada, why risk going there?

Apparently, the Mounties will be standing by to arrest any non-Canadians who commit suicide there.

It’s the same in the USA - no states allow death with dignity without estiblished residency in that state.

My biggest concern about assisted suicide laws is that it may put a lot of pressure on the sick individual to choose to end their lives to relieve their loved ones of the financial burden of supporting their healthcare.

Since Canada has govt paid healthcare, this isn’t an issue if you fall under the Canadian healthcare system. That may not be true of someone coming from the US, for example. I don’t know if this is why Canada chose to not extend this for people who do not fall under the Canadian healthcare system, but I do think it helps reduce this concern.
