Discussion: Campaign Mailbag: Will Scandal-Tarred Menendez Hurt Senate Dems' Chances?

I do worry about Menendez a little. He’s a skilled backroom politician but a charmless and arrogant campaigner. If he runs a robotic, flat-footed race this might wind up like Bradley-Whitman 1990, where an unqualified, unknown challenger comes within an eyelash of winning. Is it too late for charm school, and a redemption tour?

Correct. Menendez will win. But he will be used (along with Nancy Pelosi) as the main reason to vote against the Democratic congressional candidates.

Doubt this is a serious problem. As we get closer to mid-terms, donations to Dems will likely rise in a pretty dramatic way, due simply to the increasing lunacy of the Trump administration. People from all sides, but especially independents, are realizing how destabilizing and dangerous the GOP has become, and the indies will decide the crucial races.

Whether or not Menendez wins in November, he’s a serious drag on the party. If he wins, his mere presence in the Senate makes it harder for the Democrats to campaign as the party against corruption. He can be used by the right as a glaring example of how “there’s no difference between the two parties.” Seriously New Jersey Democrats, is this the best you’ve got?

By whom? No one with half a brain thinks the GOP is actually concerned about “character”, a word they seem to have forgotten. Grimm is running and he was convicted. No one worrying about morality in that one. Gianforte…he’s a shoo in. Joe Arpaio was able to get a GOP nod as well. They ran Roy Moore…not much concern about decency in that one. Menendez was not accused of child molestation or assault. And he was convicted of nothing. Until he is I think it would be best to flush the GOP planted “concerns” and move on with keeping that seat in the hands of Democrats.

He should have dropped out or been forced out by NJ Democrats long ago. I suspect he will win, but given that the party is running on GOP corruption to a large degree this year, it doesn’t bode well to have Menendez as an easy “both sides” target for all the media to use to negate the overall GOP corruption.

I dunno, with this POTUS and virtually the entire Republican field looking even worse, it’s kind of hard to imagine even a (old-style) corrupt clot like Menedez running into trouble.

But then I remember thinking no political party would let the Ginger Git past the donor table much less nominate him and then thinking no country would be mad enough to elect him if nominated so, basically, my opinion doesn’t mean squat. Just a hope.
