Discussion: California Students Sue After Being Suspended For 'Liking' Racist Social Media Posts

The school had no business suspending students for speech off campus. Even awful speech. This is the kind of overreach that leads to backlash.

Disagree regarding the original poster. Two reasons:

  1. Putting the materials on Instagram brought the speech on campus. Because the images featured students and a coach at the school, it is not hard to make the case that the posts were disruptive.

  2. The nooses elevated the posts from disruptive to threatening. The poster may have just been a racist goofball goofing around, but the targets wouldn’t necessarily have known that.

Albany is an affluent community adjacent to Berkeley, a city that prides itself on its liberalism and political correctness.

Weird sentence, this. If you asked people in the East Bay to list “affluent” area communities they’d say Orinda or Blackhawk or Piedmont but not Albany. They do have a good school system but consider themselves quite different from Berkeley.
