Discussion: California Man Swats Drone With T-Shirt, Ends Up In Jail On $10,000 Bail

Discussion for article #239598

And any regulation or law governing their use will be delayed for years and years because no one will actually want to try to catch up with the technology.

If it’s low enough to catch with a balled up t-shirt, it seems to me (and apparently the DA) that it’s fair game.

What in world was a law enforcement officer thinking? The drone is dangerous and was perched right above the people…low enough to be hit with a tee shirt. What could this cop have been thinking?

a drone that was hovering over his group of friends…pilot…said he was not invading the group’s privacy

An innocent dronestander…

The only way to take down a drone is with an anti-drone-drone. Because whose going to arrest a drone?

The aircraft belonged to a pilot who works for a drone company, who said he was not invading the group’s privacy

Low enough to be hit by a thrown tee shirt? A new group has been born. Hobbyist drone fuckwards that think they have a right to be complete and total assholes.

The real story here is the gross over-reaction of the cops (again!). Guy arrested for assault with a deadly t-shirt, standing his ground, and resisting being spied on by flying robot. WWGOS?

What do you want to bet that the drone’s owner was only doing it because there was a hot woman in the group? I ask you, if you were on the beach, how would you handle a creepy guy standing two feet away from you leering at your spouse/girlfriend?

Dronebros are already a thing. Not saying that drones attract douchebags, but there are a lot of douchebags with drones.

I hope this goes to a jury.

$10,000?! The bail bond system…another part of the criminal justice system that needs to undergo reform.

I actually don’t think it was an overreaction by the police. The law does say you are not allowed to interfere with a drone, even OVER YOUR OWN PROPERTY! Ask the guy in Kentucky that shot a drone hovering over his daughter while she was sunbathing in their backyard. The prosecutor did decline to prosecute probably because if he could down it with a T-shirt it was super low and close, but that is a matter for the prosecutor to decide.
Drone uses are certainly going to be pushing the asshole envelope with this! Think about- no such thing as windows that face onto private property. Every possible moment outside your house may be recorded and placed online. Thanks drone nerds!

When first I heard of “drone hunting licenses” etc. I dismissed it as more paranoid gun-nuttery. Now, after a couple of years of seeing ever more sketchy drones hovering around operated by who knows who for who knows what purpose, I am 100% ready to sign on. Bring them down by whatever means necessary.

California officials may consider recreational drones a “headache,” but if recreational drones are outlawed, only outlaws will have recreational drones.

Self-driving cars, drones, Donald Trump being taken seriously-- we are surely in the last days.

Drones don’t drone people, people drone people.

So true! And the only way to stop a bad guy with a drone is with a good guy with a drone.

If he could hit it with a t-shirt, it was too close.

The pilot said he wasn’t doing anything wrong? Bull, if he was low enough a guy could bring it down with a balled up t-shirt the owner was too low. My guess is the owner was enjoying peeping on the man and his friends.
